Does v1.7 contain spyware?
 

I've been using 1.7 for quite a long time, I'd guess a little over a year (which seems to be an eternity for P2P software loyalty, LOL). I was wondering, does it contain spyware? I've been using Ad-aware for even longer, and I run Ad-aware daily, sometimes several times a day, and it has never detected spyware associated with my install of Limewire. I seem to recall during installation of 1.7 that I was prompted to install Dot Net, but I chose no. Does that mean that as far as Limewire is concerned that I'm spyware free?

If you're running the latest version of Ad-Aware, you can be pretty sure you're spyware-free. If you want a newer version of LW without spyware or ads, you can try Clean LimeWire. It was announced in this thread.

Yeah, I'm running Ad-aware 5.8 with the lastest reference file, and also Zone Alarm, and Cookie Crusher for good measure. I'm always reluctant to fix something that's not broken, i.e. upgrading from LW 1.7. Unless there's some must have feature, I guess I'll stay with 1.7

I dont' think 1.7 has any spyware, however it is missing a lot of features. Most significantly is the ability to download from multiple users -- multiplying the download speed.

I'm also not sure if you have access to all the files the newest version reports, ie. if there are any features in the newer versions that make files exclusive to them (the peer technology, maybe).

I have gone from 1.7 to the latest (on a mac X, and have found it much more reliable and faster). For windows I would recommend the Pro version or the Clean Limewire compiled by VTOLfreak (both without bundled sowftware).


PS Does that cookie cutter disable password cookies also? Does it prevent viewing some sites?

i was using limewire version 1.7c which still had no spyware or ads but since now their {limewire's developers} have started to use such things, i have moved to aqualime, which can be found at www.unitethecows.com if you probe some or www.zeropaid.com . also, winmx has released a version which is also free of spyware and ads... i am also using xolox which can be found if you look... good luck on getting off this limewire fix. hehe

There are some proggies that I couldn't live without, and Cookie Crusher is one of them. It will prompt the user when a site attempts to write a cookie to the hard drive. You can then tell it to:

1. Never accept that cookie, and it will never ask you about that particular cookie again, it will never accept it.

2. Always accept that cookie, and it will never ask you about that particular cookie again, it will always accept it.

3. Reject that cookie, and it will reject it and prompt you again the next time that particular cookie tries to write to the HDD.

4. Accept, and it will accept it and prompt you again the next time that particular cookie tries to write to the HDD.

So if the site that you are trying to access requires cookies, then you'll have to accept it, however, you can be very selective and accept only the cookie required by that site. You can block all the adware cookies, and the rest of the garbage. You can also configure Cookie Crusher to open automaticly when other programs of your choice open, such as IE, dial-up connection, ect. And then you can also configure Cookie Crusher to open other programs when it opens. For example, when I launch IE, Cookie Crusher automaticly launches, and when Cookie Crusher launches, it automaticly launches DU Meter.
