How I appear to others

My computer is on a local subnet that my wireless router creates. So my IP is say for example 10.1.0.215, though my ISP has given my router a different IP number.

My question is if I am downloading a mp3 from someone, what IP number shows up to the person I am downloading from? Am I harder to identify?

Hello!

There will only be one IP that will be seen on the Internet or over Gnutella and that is the public IP that your router has assigned for outside traffic.Your internal private IP addresses on your LAN will never be displayed on any service either Gnutella nor the Internet.

If you are accessing the Internet through a local network
you are using the IP of the one computer or router who's accessing the Internet.

The IP you have is only a local one,
if you download from others the IP which your ISP assigned to you is displayed on their client.

>Am I harder to identify?
Well that depends on where you using it.
If it is a school network with dozens of computers where many people use the same computer its hard to track you personally down. If someone tries to track you down he would track your school but he wouldnt know who used the computer..

but if you are using it from your home then its the same as
you are accessing the Gnet without a router.

Thanks for the posts.

From what you are telling me, it appears that the earthlink IP number is the one that people see.

I asked because I did a search on a file I was sharing and an ip number came up that was the same as the one my airport assigned to me. Coincidence?

Is there a way I can test to see how I appear?

Yeah, there's a way.
I have uploaded a script which gets your *real* IP.

I don't think the IP the Airport assigned to you will show up. It will would be nice if you could spoof the IP number though. While I was waiting for Episode II I had the feeling that Geoge Lucas himself was watching the download (since it took days!)

Yeah you could use a proxy if you want to make the tracking more difficult....

Is there anyway to be anonamous and share? I don’t want my IP to show when Im downloading or uploading

Paradog July 17th, 2002 09:48 AM

No, unfortunately there's none.
Without IPs the whole Gnutellanet wouldnt work.
There are some other projects which try to improve
the security. But thats not Gnutella anymore:

I dont recommend you to use Filetopia, I tried it once
but you usually get 0 search results. Even sometimes for
searching "e"
