PC vs Mac Limewire performance

Does anyone know why my brother's PC gives him 40 hosts and my mac with MacOS 10.1.5 and Limewire 2.6.3 only gives 6 for exactly the same search. Even when I repeat the search it's the same. I am not pleased!

Done that - we have same number of peers

We checked that first. We each have it set for 6 peers, and we are both going through the same router to the same adsl line. He has a P4 PC and I have G3 Mac Powerbook. Both using the same version of Limewire which is the latest one. Any other ideas?

Maybe the PC version is faster?
I tried the mac version, it had some errors.
Also you can never be sure that you connect to peers which have the same efficiency, so maybe your bro just had luck with the 40 hosts...

more than luck

It's got to be more than luck. My brother's PC consistently gets more search results with more hosts for each item than I do on the Mac. I ought to contact the Limewire developers and put this question to them, but not sure where I can reach them, or even if they will note the queries of such lowly persons as myself.

Maybe you should post this problem in the LimeWire forum which you can find on www.gnutellaforums.com too.
Most LimeWire developers don't look at the General Gnutella / Gnutella Network Discussion boards.

Thanks will try Limewire forum instead

I am new to these forums and hadn't realised at first that this wasn't for Limewire particulary. I have switched as you suggested. Thanks.

Because of Gnutella's size, the nodes you connect to is fairly "random". It's not truely random, because there's always a chance multiple nodes connect to the same node. But apparently, in your case this didn't happen when you tested it.

So, when your PC connected to a number of nodes, they may have had connections to other nodes who had plenty of the files you were looking for. On the other hand, by pure chance, your MacOS connected to a number of nodes that didn't share much (of what you were looking for). Its partially a design flaw (because this possibility CAN be reduced a bit), but its also a "user fault" (as in: users leeching instead of sharing).

Since the MacOS and PC version of Limewire have exactly the same Gnutella cores, there's otherwise no difference - except for performance based on the connection of each computer, and the system configuration.

Problem is constant not occasional

Thanks for that info. However, this problem of fewer nodes appearing for a given file search on the Mac compared to on the PC happens on every search all the time, and therefore although your explanation makes some sense I feel there has to be some other explanation, especially if the Limewire core is the same on both platforms.

correction

I meant fewer hosts for a given search, not fewer nodes though I understand they are related.
