LimeWire Sucks!!!

This has to be the worst god-awful software I've ever used! I choke with laughter every time it asks me if I want to pay for this crap. What's even more laughable is it says 8 people have worked 2 years to design this!!! They obviously were learning as they went....This software freezes my computer, the options don't work right - they don't block what I want or don't stop others from downloading - it's total crap! What's the absolute worst though is that there a lot of porno that pops up on seemly innocent searches - even disgusting child porn!! Doesn't anyone check for this stuff? Where's the feds??? Does ANYONE know a good software that ONLY downloads songs, doesn't hog computer resources and actually works properly???

Sorry you feel that way, I love it. Have been using for a long time. works great with my puter and downloads smoke. Find anything anytime.

Hope you find something that works for you!

KenRay53 September 27th, 2002 05:59 AM

My two cents.

Try searching on [your search].mp3. Also, I do believe there is a selection to search on songs only. That works fine in my case and returns only mp3 titles.

If you cheated by selecting a higher connection speed and have too many connections you computer will most likely run slower. Another problem I encountered is that if I go nuts and have too many downloads going at the same time (in my case it is greater than 30) the computer will sometimes appear to freeze.

As far as content goes, Limewire has absolutely no way of controlling what gets shared on the network. It does have a filtering ability for searches though. When people disguise porn as something else (some do) the filters naturally get defeated.

I have been using Limewire for a little over a year and have found it basically OK. I like some of its features that the others don't have.

As far as paying for it, I do. I don't expect a highly refined piece of software for the $9.50 they are asking. I have paid over $300 for software that had more problems than Limewire.

Good luck on your music quest.

Ken

I've been a LimeWire'er for a little over a month..... and I'm quite pleased with it... Not a single problem so far. :) I have the Pro version... wouldn't even consider a P2P client with ads & spyware garbage!!!

However, I have recently been playing around with Shareaza, and will admit that they give LimeWire Pro a real run for the money (no pun intended). ;)
Shareaza has all the features of LW, plus a few..... in a very attractive interface, with no ads/spyware, and.... no "Pro" version... completely FREE!

I'll most likely be using both clients.... I feel they're the best of the Gnutella bunch!

There is a choice to only search for MP3 files and there is a filter option where you can filter out "dirty" words.

Limewire is a very involved program that must work on a host of operating systems with a lot of people that may only know how to turn their computer on if the switch is clearly marked.

The free version is good and by paying a very small fee I was able to avoid the ads. Why would anyone expect people to write software & give it away without a hitch? How are they supposed to eat??

I have had very good luck with Limewire with minimal problems.

Once when I had failed several times in a row to get any hits on some obscure mp3's I was trying to find, I decided to test the system by typing in the first popular name that came to my mind. Do you have any idea how many porn files contain Brittney Spears in the filename? Now, I type in ******* when I want to be certain I'm actually getting my searches out there. Lots of mp3 hits, but very little accidental porn. Anyway, I prefer the anarchy of the internet over censorship of any kind. At work, I have trouble doing my job some days because their blocking software has decided that one of my information resources is a political site, so I waste valuable time having to get a special password to access it, only to have the password rapidly expire and then have to go through the whole process again.

sdooh September 30th, 2002 06:16 PM

My only complaint about Lime is that it is a bit of a resources hog and I can't do any online gaming when it's running. (If I am downloading from other sources, I can.)

Re the porn -- only place I have seen porn pitch up is if I have my upload monitor turned on. Amazing what filthy little people there are out there. There's never been a single one in response to my searches.

If you limit your searches to the minimum for it to be recognizable you will get more hits. ie don't search for a full song title or even a full artist name -- no everyone out there spells or thinks the same about what constitutes a filename.

just did a search for ********* got 21 hits twenty viruses and one legitimate answer. did another for network+ recieved 36 hits 29 viruses and seven legit. people either clean your pc's or kiss file sharing goodby the record industry wont have to do anything you will commit suicide all by yourself. do a search for norton and install it for crying out loud dont be a jerk. If its on your computer it is slowing you to a crawl also. wise up, wake up or get off the internet. Ignorance can be cured stupidity is terminal.

Limewire Bites!

This really bites the big one!!!!!! A total waste of time
to even download it...doesn't work, no connection, it's
totally useless. Limewire used to work on Mac...
remember? What happened?

Unregistered October 6th, 2002 09:44 PM

hey, wow there's a concept. we should all complain about people who are working to give us free music.

Unregistered October 7th, 2002 03:33 AM

its occasionaly dispiriting isn't it the whiney rants of the 'gimmie gimmie' set - limewire is a very good p2p client that just does provide good returns for anyone with a minute quotient of patience - yes the 'requery' message is a pain and long ago should've been replaced with the "you're doomed" message but limewire (along with shareaza I reckon) provides a really good way to progress from someone with no files to share to someone with a store of little treasures to share all over the world -

when I first discovered mp3 files it was back in the days of "mp3filter" which for those of us unable to access napster was a godsend - gradually you learn that good rippers exist (yay audiograbber !!) and that its possible to participate more fully in the p2p community and for my money limewire has always been an 'honourable player' in the educative process (I do so hope the 'skimming' accusations are groundless)

dumping on limewire strikes me as cheap shots at easy targets by the lazy and impatient

I've had no problems

Dude upgrade your computer or get a Mac.
This free program is the ****. I don't have to jump through all kinds of hoop like I did when I first got on IRC.
Now, all I do is put in the artist and....boom....200 jams for the hell of it.
You ever think it's not the program or the puter....maybe it's the cpu at the keyboard!

SpikeIX October 11th, 2002 05:44 PM

I have to agree with Unreg on one thing:thats requery sent waiting is the most annoying thing ive ever come across. Otherwise It's great. I can't find the KH theme Simple And Clean anywhere but LimeWire! One other thing thats just strange is that when I click connect under file,if Im at the search page,it will disconnect before I can do anything:p I might be on grass but I think its LimeWire^^'

Errr.... where do I start....

Ok. This thread has become something useless, and may be breaking some forum rules. All this "Limewire-sucks-'cause-it-just-does" posts are completely out of place here. Say something constructive or don't say anything at all. I think you have all misunderstood this Open Discussion thing. I don't want to start editing all your posts. Just re-read them and see what I mean. Even the very title of this thread proves what I'm saying.

agree completely - this thread is getting (got) silly - limewire IS a good p2p client and limewire ultrapeers are appreciated by folks using other clients such as shareaza

I've offered my share of criticisms (pleeeeese give up on the requery message - its just so annoying and misleading) but hey - lets get real - there's not many good gnutella options and LW is unquestionably one of the best

just lately this forum seems to have attracted a disproportionate share of disgruntled (but vocal) users that maybe says something about the latest version (that I tried and then deleted in favour of the preceding version) but even so its hard to not get a tad irked - it all smacks of "I want it all and I want it now"

Hey BpMax!!!!!!

Hey BPmax AKA Black sheep,
I wrote the original post you scumbag - try typing in the word "christian" searching on all types of files and see how much porno pops up. You are one of those people that have a big mouth but you haven't seen how this crappy software called LimeWire works on different computers. I am computer programmer so I know crap when I see it. I get hits on searches and the hits don’t even contain the word I was searching for. Furthermore, when I try to changes the options, any of them, they do not engage until I close LimeWire and then restart it and sometimes the changes don’t take effect at all. It also mysteriously and randomly displays and then doesn't display the shared folders I'd like to use. I don't limit my searches to "audio" from "any type" because when I do this the same exact file from the same user shows up in "all types" but not "audio" for an .MP3 file - go figure!
Some software....Yeah I know its free but they are effectively working their asses off for nothing - when someone like me becomes so frustrated that I have to go find another sharing or P2P software, then LimeWires’ advertisers are the ones losing out....

JDFedùle October 29th, 2002 08:50 AM

Will the people who don't like LimeWire just shut up about it and switch to another client without gathering enemies on the forums?

I hate to act like a moderator, but these forums were meant for people who either LIKE LimeWire or people who dont like it but make constructive suggestions for it's improvement. Plain LimeWire Bashing without any suggestions, even if it IS constructive, is just pointless, because it can't be solved.
Unless you have a suggestion, don't bother.

rutro October 29th, 2002 09:33 AM

Doubtful....

Great request/suggestion JDFedùle, and I absolutely agree....

However, unfortunately the reality... it will most likely never happen! ;)
