what are ogg files

I down loaded a song but my mp3 player's wont play it anybody know what an ogg type mucis file is or more importantly how to here or convert it

You cannot convert superior ogg files to puny mp3 files without huge loss of quality. There are music players for nearly all OSs playing ogg files AND ludicrously inferior mp3 files.

DO NOT CONVERT OGG FILE TO MP3 FILE OR PREPARE TO BE DESTROYED!

Yeah, that really answered the question. Thanks for your helpful insight.

To Trap_Jaw

thank you for the info. I got a free trial player to try it out Never Heard of this format before

Winamp 2.8 or above will play Vorbis; XMMS will also play it. I don't know about OSX players, but I've heard rumors of an iTunes plugin.

And I'll agree that if you convert from one lossy format to another I and anyone else who cares about sound quality gets to kill you.

Audion for the Mac plays ogg files but there are some issues with it. First the older 2.1 version didn't play any of the ogg files I gave it even though it should have played them. Version 3 will actually play ogg files but the filenames must end with the .ogg extension. If you forget to add the extension playing the file will cause a crash.

Apparently ogg files have description tags similar to ID3 tags for mp3s but you cannot edit the ogg tags, only view them in the playlist. This is with OS 9.1 and the crashing problem might just be limited to my computer.

What exactly is the .ogg file format?

trap_jaw November 13th, 2002 02:45 PM

It's an open-source format that supports variable bitrate - like mp3pro or wma. I prefer it over mp3 since nobody can be charged royalities for using it.
