Files Deleted!

Hello..

I have an Archos MP3 player that is basically a USB hard drive when I connect it to my machine. I have been using this with LimeWire over the past few days.. I store my files in a directory on this drive and have shared the whole drive for use by LimeWire / people on the Internet.

Well, this afternoon I went to play some music and MusicMatch which is the software I use for my music library, said it could not find the file.. I thought "wierd", so I played some other music, and eventually came upon another missing file.. I eventually had MusicMatch "repair broken links" and it found 282! missing MP3 files.. Keep in mind that I had just created my library a day or so BEFORE installing LimeWire so I am 100% sure those files were there.. Now they aren't!

This isn't a huge deal because of the 170+ hours of music I had on my MP3 player, 99% of it was from CDs that I own that I ripped.. so I can just get those songs from my CDs again.. but it is still VERY alarming that 282 music files were suddenly GONE from my MP3 player..

Does anyone have any idea? Is it possible that someone could delete files off my machine through LimeWire? Or was LimeWire (it kept crashing today..) to blame?

I was running 2.8.5 and it crashed once and I sent the debug info to bugs@limewire.com and got a message back about "downgrading" but could not find the older version of LimeWire to download.. and I did an uninstall of 2.8.5 and downloaded what was supposedly 2.8.4 from the LimeWire site but it installed again as actualyl 2.8.5.

Needless to say I am DONE with LimeWire.. But I'd still like some feedback on ideas about my mssing files..

Thanks

Rich

Hello Rich,

I am probally not going to be a big help to you, but I am going to have a crack at helping you.

I don't have any idea about your mp3 player and what could have caused it to do what it did, So I not too much help there.

Does anyone have any idea? Is it possible that someone could delete files off my machine through LimeWire? Or was LimeWire (it kept crashing today..) to blame?

From what I currently understand of how LimeWire works, another person isn't able to delete files off of your machine via LimeWire. I have been around here only for a short while, but I haven't seen any other cases like this. The issues with LimeWire crashing is another story.

AS you can probally notice by reading some threads in the LimeWire forums, there are problems with the lastest version with the stability of it. Thus manny people have gone back to the later version that are more stable. The only difference between the new version and some of the older version is the different features.

I will look to where I can get a link for you to older versions of LimeWire, or maybe if you want you could just try doing a search in your limewire for older versions.

I hope this helps (probally not) :D

Hi KathW,

Thanks for your input, but I did not move or delete any files.. In fact, one of the files that was missing I had listened too about 10 minutes before I noticed all these other files were missing.. Then I tried to play the song again and it told me it could not find it.

I understand completely how MusicMatch works.. and I know that I did not move or delete any files.

I may download an older version of LimeWire, but more than likely I'll just uninstall it.

Rich is Right!

MP3 Files can be deleted from your machine. It's happened to me twice in the last week.

Could Be..

Hey,

My friend experienced a similar thing -- he thinks it had to do with putting songs in his LimeWire playlist and then deleting them from the PlayList.. he thinks that is when his songs got deleted, because the files he was missing were all ones he had been listening too..

removing files from the playlist should not delete them. it does not happen to me. You can delete files in LimeWire though. In the library tab, if you press delete (which is right next to the "to playlist" button, it does delete them from the drive. Could your friend have clicked that?

Same Problem

I'm having the same problem. I've lost random files in my "music" directory. I don't have any complete albums anymore. I used to have over 5000 files, now I have aroud 4200...so I'm missing about 800 at this point.

What the hell is going on?

This sucks!

I'm having the same problem. Since when does software you pay for actually erase data (except for that crap from Redmond)?

Rich, I'm not familiar with your media player but let me assure you that your mp3's are still there on the hard drive somewhere and probebly still recoverable. I'm not a big fan of Norton U,s but may I suggest that you invest(well worth it) at WallMart 20$ on FIX IT UTILITIES. A top notch antivirus from VCOM and about 25 other utilities including EASY RECOVERY which has saved my *** several times from rebooting from rescue because of lost DLL's. The program will search all free space and used for any complete and lost files and will restore them. Hope this helps, also with fix-it antivirus updates are auto and never a charge for deffinitions.

have you tried...

doing a search on your hard drive for one of the songs that has turned up missing using the windows search feature... pick music and then the titles?

That is how I found out where my music was disappearing to.

I found out where, not why..... only that it was probably caused by "windows media player" taking over in some way.

You can view the following thread for more info....

Good Luck,
