Sharing with Friends

If I'm running Limewire 8.6 for the MAC and my friend is running the same for Windows, how come we can't see each other's music? We are both using cable modems. Is there a shortcut to connect to each other directly without downloading a song and then browsing host? No results occur when either of us try and search for a specific song in the other's library. Any help would be awesome! Thanks
