Ultrapeer and Leaf---Duh, huh?

Your client is a leaf node shielded by an Ultrapeer. Hence you will see few or no searches in the monitor window....

------
Don't understand------can someone put this in clearer words for me? I'm very experienced online -- and a complete novice at sharing like this....I'm in LOVE with it!

Which I shouldn't be, as my band and I still wish we could earn our hard-earned money back on our CD's for sale...

Having said that-----last night I was enjoying watching the searches rolling in at high speed----now there are none...as I think it over---I haven't changed anything! How did I turn into a Leaf? Or am I not? And how can I see the neat incoming list again? I don't wanna be a leaf if it isn't interesting to watch.

What to do, what to do....ah, if only Shakespeare were here to advise me...but perhaps there is a wise moderator?

Thank you!
Paula

If you are a leaf, your ultrapeers will only send you only those queries that contain keywords matching files you are sharing (that's not always accurate but it saves easily 95% of the traffic between leafs and ultrapeers). Ultrapeers are not shielded that way (or at least they were not shielded when that FAQ was written) so they can see much more queries in their montior window.

So, if you want to see what other people are searching for you'd better become an ultrapeer.

Life as a leaf

The use of the word leaf is intended almost literally. There are many leaves in a forest and fewer trees. When you are new to Gnutella, you will always be designated a leaf and you have to access the wealth of copyright free material through the ultrapeer network. In this more lowly position, you will not be prejudiced, The search system is designed to return the same number of hits regardless whether the searcher is leaf or ultrapeer.

However, should you have lots of free bandwidth, and you provide good qualntities of copyright free material on a reliable basis with a high upload success rate, then in time you may be designated an utrapeer and a proportion of your bandwidth will carry the traffic between the other ultrapeers, and leaves will connect to you for access to Gnutella.

So I may not be Shakespearean, forsooth, but I have tarried enough on this commission and must exit stage left in search of someone bare.

Ahhhhh, and so many thanks to both moderators...my questions have been answered quickly, no muss or fuss, and I'm now clearer on the issue...

One detail--how do I know copyright free material from other material? I know that we own the copyright on our own original songs...but -- what about the old favorites I'm downloading???

So---my goal should be to become an Ultrapeer as soon as possible?

You may indeed be not Shakespeare, but methinks you be just FINE (fahn!) on dis list...and I too must fade into the pale moon, since I went not to my chamber last night to sleep, but spent the hours poring over Limewire by candlelight...well, actually, by monitor light. But didn't candles sound better?

Adieu, and expect more questions...I've Only Just Begun....<moderators cringing at the prospect>

Yet more questions?

When the night is yet so young? Ah well, it seems I must high me back to the task of answering you after tarrying a moment with the bear. I'm sure you would never want to download copyright protected material because that would be illegal, right? As long as the favourites are, as you say, old and therefore outside the usual period of copyright protection or you are downloading in other circumstances representing an exception to whatever laws you are operating under, life will be trouble free in a public forum such as this.

It is good to be amibitious but, if I were you, I would drop into Preferences and tag the leaf option because being an ultrapeer can have unexpected effects on your machine and, if you are inexperienced, it would be better to stay a leaf until you have a better understanding of how your machine works.

Fo' sho' dis 'as bin a wicked pleasure. Asta la vista, Paula.

A Leaf by Any Other Name

A leaf I will remain until my betters feel me worthy of the trust of the Ultrapeer Tree thangg.

I'm not overly ambitious---just a Macaholic with a new toy...I use my toys heavily!

And I always play by the rules of whatever state that tells me what condition my condition is in.

Lame reference, but being Shakespearian can slow down typing and heaven knows we don't allow that in THIS house...

Thanks for all your help...

I'll be bock.....<--what, so now I'm
Schwartzenager??? (sp?) That would be more challenging than Shakespear, for pete's sake.

Paula (and in the earlier message, you said BARE, not bear...I caught the reference, uh huh, Billy Bob...)
