RIAA Threats...

Is anyone concerned about the recent threats by the RIAA to sue all of us for theft? Personally, I'm not sure what they will be able to do realisticlally or if it is a bluff to try to get all of us to cease file sharing. Please post your thoughts on their latest action and what your feelings are...Does anyone plan to do anything differently in view of the RIAA threats?

The RIAA is mostly trying to scare people from sharing, but they are going to sue individual users. I'd say that you might be in danger if you share more than 1000 files. Anyway I live in Norway where the RIAA have no power at all. It's not even illegal to download stuff.:D

Re: RIAA Threats

I think its completely bogus, and as a result, I refuse to buy any CDs now. Not a one! If I were a rich man, I'd melt the 1500 or so that I've bought over the years, into a nice plastic ball, and fire it thru their front door with a cannon.

As for whether its true or not, it is. Read these articles posted yesterday:

I don't think it's an idle threat - I believe they will actually sue individuals just to make a point. As for me, I won't be buying any more CDs either - screw them!

Well, I certainly do not plan on purchasing new CDs anymore after this. Any music I purchase will be used from individuals though Amazon.com or secondspin.com. 1) I get the CDs cheaper and 2) I circumvent the RIAA "machine" and NO money goes to them. Perhaps if more folks would stick to their guns they will see that is their heavy handed tactics that is the reason they are losing money, and (or) their failure to embrace new technologies in distribution.

I for one have hated for YEARS having to spend 15 dollars for 1 or two songs I would eventually end up listening to. The rest were always garbage anyway.

Anonymity

I'm somewhat of a new user to the Limewire/Gnutella forums. Is there a way to achieve anonymity when sharing files with Limewire? Are there any 3rd party utilities available? Please let me know. Thanks!

RIAA THREATS

I think this is all a ploy to get people to stop sharing, too. And they are using the media to scare people. Imagine if they were to really go through with it ?
They would have to sue everyone in the entire world 1 at a time. And the CD R companies would loose money on sales, programs like itunes would loose money..... RIAA is screaming broke now, they would have to spend money and time in court all over the world. I think it's a big scare. Besides, next thing you know, they will sue libraries for loaning their cds for free or ebay auctioneers for selling used cds..... Sharing is o diffrent than loaning a cd to a friend. And they can't sue for that. They need to get over themselves.

File-Sharing Subpoenas

In today's Seattle PI, there is an article stating that subpoenas has be issued and those prosecuted will be fined $750-$150,000 per song downloaded. I do not want to be a part of this any longer, because it's not worth it to me. I would even like to contact Limewire and get my name removed from their records.

Can anyone say...."PGP" it'd totally secure, absolutely unbreakablr technology to share files with. Only thing is, you need to start a closed network to start with and build your "key chain" list. Do a Google search for PGP and read for yourself about the technology. The FBI has been working on breaking this encryption for years and still hasn't even come close.

still sharing

Well, I've been sharing around 7000 files whenever I'm not using my line for something else that takes a lot of bandwidth for quite a while... since those heady first days of napster... I'm not on the list.... however I am changing my sharing a bit, ftp server and several good friends just trading via our ftp servers, we each buy used CDs in turn and put them on our ftp servers so the rest can download them... hell, i've got money to burn, but that's the bit that actually puts me off of file sharing a bit, if I was penniless and over the age of 18, what can the RIAA do to me? You don't sue someone who has nothing, look at all the bad publicity mcdonalds got when they sued an out of work mailmail and unemployed bar maid for handing out anti-mcdonald leaflets in front of one of their stores... www.mcspotlight.com if you're really interested... mcdonalds soon wished they had never picked up that stick to bash them with. I predict this is going to backfire heavily on the RIAA in the end.. and I aim to keep sharing selected portions of the library. Now... if we all ran linux boxes, we could just use oportunistic virtual private networks and no one would know what was going on .. I doubt anyone in the RIAA has enough brain cells to even operate linux.

Cheers
Jogdial
