Adware

I ahve been using Limewire for about 2 years. Recently I installed PestPatrol on my system. I was surprised, to say the least, when Psetpatrol found 149 instances of adware from Limewire! Then, to add insult to injury, it also uncovered 2 CONFIRMED from SaveNow, 1 from KaZaa and 1 from XoLoX!!!!!!
I bought this program on the promise that it contained no spyware. I don't appreciate being lied to, and I want to know what the 'good folks' at LImewire are going to do about it.
Thanks for letting me vent!!!!!

The adware must have come from the free version you should have used before. AFAIK, there is no adware in the pro version.

Adware

I use limewire pro, never have used the free version. I uninstalled limewire, ran Pestpatrol and eliminated all adware. I then reinstalled Limewire Pro, and found a total of 149 instances of adware. ALL of them came from installing Limewire Pro 3.8.3!

It would help if you could clarify whether you ran the PestPatrol BEFORE you removed LimeWire and re-installed it...
Were the 'dataminer' files there before you removed LimeWire and were they deleted from your system by PestPatrol?
Did the same number of dataminers attributable to LimeWire appear AFTER you did a 'fresh' install of LimeWire ?
And, did you remove ALL LimeWire folders and restore registry settings in the process of removing LimeWire ?

If what you are describing was a common occurence due to LimeWire than these forums would be awash with people screaming their heads off about it !!!

ADWARE?SPYWARE?

OK.......I uninstalled Limewire. I ran PestPatrol and removed all applications of Limewire Adware, Savenow, KaZaa( which I have never used) and XoloX. I ran Pestpatrol again to make sure it was all gone. I shredded the recycle bin. I then reinstalled Limewire Pro 3.8.6. After installing Limewire I one more time ran Pest Patrol. What a Surprise!! There was all the adware right back on my system! NO ADWARE?? No SPYWARE?? BS!! I did not pay for this program so that Limewire could fill up my system with crap! 149 applications of crap! I am uninstalling, and telling my friends to do the same. If i don't get my money back, I will report it to the fcc, and do a charge back with my card, through the bank, against Limewire.

Fuzzie, a virus infects your computer, for your information. :o Proceed accordingly with an AV....

ursula February 22nd, 2004 02:16 PM

Easy there, Fuzzie1... You're risking your hair going straight !

I'm only trying to help to clarify the problem.
I do not use LimeWire and I have no 'axe to grind' here for them.

But, I've been involved with Gnutella for quite a while (and long ago on a faraway planet used LW) and I cannot think of any client that would survive 1 month if they were bundeling the stuff you're describing and finding.

It must be there from something(s) else.

I'm sure that Peerless and trap_jaw4 and many others will back me up on this when I say that it is not coming from LimeWire...
NOT 149 instances... !!!

I am not familiar with the efficacy of PestPatrol... I use Adaware 6 Pro... Have you tried any other detection/removal apps ?
btw... I have used numerous other "adware/spyware" tools and can definitely say that, as with Lavasoft Adaware, the freebie versions normally do NOT perform anywhere near the same 'depth' as the purchased versions.
Just a tip.

Promise you that no one takes your problem lightly.
There will be some resolution to it, just hang in there, huh ?

Just tried this experiment myself and the OP is correct in that pest-patrol reports hundreds of spyware items after and install of LimeWire 3.8.6 on a clean windows PC. However, the fault's with Pest Patrol. It iss marking any file with "limewire" in its name or path as suspected spyware. Even an empty directory named "limewire" on a clean PC is picked up by the tool.

Probably best to avoid Pest Patrol, it looks to be buggy. ;)

Better items of software for checking for spyware and adware are:

Lavasoft Ad-Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster

Can you tell us the names of the spyware? AFAIK the PRO version is clean.

NO bundled software in LimeWire PRO

I've been reviewing this thread in the forum and I must comment that there is NO BUNLDED software of any kind in LimeWire PRO. Anyone who finds any sort of bundled software on their computer after installing LimeWire PRO was there before the install. We take great pride in our product and do not install any sort of bundles with our Pro product.

Thanks,
