deceptive descriptions
 

i have come across a lot of wrong / missleading descriptions of movie content and i was wondering if anything can be done about it ???

This seems to be an issue with many types of files on the netwk. And it seems to take different forms as well, such as misleading file content, advertisements for various things such as websites. It's almost spam. Corrupt files being offered could probably be included in this area (whether the uploader is aware or not?!). I just want to join along & grumble about it too. This issue has been around for a few years & seems to be getting worse as more people use the network. There must be deliberate motivations from some corners at the very least. Why (for what possible dirty reason) would somebody want other people to use their bandwidth to dwnld something that's of no use to them. I amongst many others would also like to know the reasons & what can be done about it. Banding together & blocking them out of the system might be one solution to make the point. Love to have more input into this topic from anybody & all.

What I don't get is how come if it is misleading and/or badly named files, so many people have them, or rather they have so damn many sources? At least if you realise that it's a badly named file and know the title, why not alter it and serve that to the network? I mean, there's gotta be someone that knows what the true name of the file is.
And how come people insist on keeping those files that when opened take you to some site on the net (although, to tell the truth, I haven't had any such files yet)?
Blocking is good enough but how many people block? And also think about users that leave for work while leaving their computer to dld stuff. Upon their return they would have a bad file and a block from some users. That's not good.

It just came to me (forgive the Hellenism if it is a non-valid modern English expression): could it be that people are keeping those files because they are popular files and because they want to have as many files as possible in order to avoid being blocked by LW's "leecher-filter"? I bet there are some that do it for this reason.
Well, message to these people: the "leecher-filter" don't work.
So stop serving those stupid files already.

I've noticed, particularly recently, when searching for music or other multimedia, identical/similar pseudonym named files show up that are jpg's of a link to a website. It's a girl meets boy chat website. It seems to have targeted many of the more popular searches. If that's not deliberate spam, then what is it?
A couple of weeks ago (unless I'm mistaken) I thought I came across a post which named a website/forum/email address where people could list corrupt files found on the Gnutella netwk. Despite a couple of hrs searching I haven't been able to locate it (perhaps I'm not using the right s. criteria. It might have been in a 'Sticky' thread.)
I was tempted to include links to several threads that discussed similar issues but since it has been discussed in parts before, I decided why bother. There's not been much interest shown in this thread anyway! Everybody knows it's a problem & that it's getting worse, but all people seem to want to do is temporarily vest their anger/frustration (using the forum as an outlet). No positive suggestions about how to overcome these issues. Although I did come across one thread that one party admitted to talking to the FBI about disclosing the addresses of those who indulge in under-age porn (ie-browsing of their computers listed high no's of such content.)

No issue whatsoever! I was simply making the point that something had been done to weed out one of the types of problems discussed in this topic, even though it was an extreme example & certainly not a direct example. (I was feeling tired & frustrated at not finding the post I was after.) Pity something couldn't be done about the spammers & 'loaded' files, etc. As for child pornography which is initiated & attracted to by those who arguably shouldn't be allowed on the streets, I feel the same. As for policing the Gnutella network, that's a tough issue. I'm sure people wouldn't compromise the system in order to keep out those who abuse it in ways I mentioned earlier. I don't suppose you or anybody else have any other suggestions about how to overcome these issues or what could be included in future P2P soft versions to weed out these menaces. The latter area, if included as 'more improved' filters might help the average person not have to have 'those' bandwidths connecting to your computer. It's certainly a difficult & broad topic & it expands very easily.

If some people only want other people to upload useless files from them, then why choose a popular search choice. And as I may have mentioned before, why waste 'their' upload bandwidth for people to dnld as such. 'Why' or for what possible 'sinister reason' do they want to attract other people to their bandwidth. Too many questions & too few answers (I certainly haven't seen many at this site yet!) Suggestions, suggestions, please!? Whatever the answer, the average user can't feel as though they've had unnecessary restrictions imposed upon them - that's a restriction of freedoms that're enjoyed. Yet if each user had their own control over what they received (eg- previous post suggestions), then it wouldn't impose on anybody else b'c those options are already available if perhaps presently only in a weaker form than it potentially could be.

that is the main question, why waste the time when it leads to some kind of pay per view site. if i wanted to go to one and join, I would. Is there a way i could identify this download so other people would know. Also can i block it ?

Not to my knowledge. You can use filters in your searches (see your LW Prefs/Menu-Options). As for deceptive files, it doesn't seem much can be done. It is possible to block out certain users from your system. Again, see your LW Prefs/Options in menu bar. I've never used it & appears to me to have some limitations as to when it can be used.

Out of the blue, I found the site I said I'd been looking for a reference to. I forgot I'd made a note & only just found it: quote:
