You could buy a DIVX dvd player.
Philips makes one that is real good.

I come across a few that wont play properly, but at 69 bux it aint bad.

I bought mine at Target. Rumor is that Walmart.com sells them too.

DOnt buy the poloroid from Bestbuy....its crap i took mine back after 3 days of testing.

You can also throw in WMA, DVD-WMA formats as well for the newer models. I think there's another one/2 formats that're starting to be included such as better/more audio formats support.

MOVIES

Why buy a Divx Player? If you have a great video card and surround sound just get current divx codecs and run it from your CPU. You can run a cable to your tv off your video card. The quality is only as good as quality from the download but when lucky, you can get excellent quality. My 37" tv is across the room and I don't have any degradation from the cable. I wrote a nice little graphic enhancer that boosts quality and sharpness to clean up marginal movies and videos. Some files claim to be divx but aren't really, something to watch for. Good Luck

AVI files

What program do I use to convert the .avi files to a useable file that can be put on DVD's that I can play on my home DVD player?

Hi

If you buy a DVD player get the RCA DRC240N much better than Philips DVP642/US DVP630/UK. I have both and the Philips sucks it can not play many movies and has trouble with sub-titles and the zoom + the firm-ware is getting worse not better!

RCA plays MPEG 1,2,4 Divx/Xid/WMA/ old DivX movies the ones you had to pay for to view (Circuit City). It also supports FF (dshow)/GMC/PEL. There is no firm-ware upgrades, but write this email and you can get all the firm-ware ISO updates you need. The guy works for RCA, I have installed 2 firm-ware updates and it has made the Divx/Xvid play so close to DVD it awesome. The new menu maker is cool too!
