Trojan Horse/ Cracker/Virus Please help!!

While using Limewire, I have had downloads start that I did not select for downloading. I killed most of them while they were downloading, but many of them were pornographic and I do not want them on my system. I am a novice computer user and am not sure if this is a virus or some other kind of snafu. I downloaded an AV and it detected a worm virus, numerous instances, and it apparently took care of the problem. However, I have had this happen several times and have deleted all of my downloaded files and uninstalled Limewire and even restored my system only to have this happen again after downloading for several days with Limewire. Is it the files I am downloading? Can the virus/worm/whatever stay on my c drive after restoring the drive. I have also tried file shredders...are they effective in deletign viruses or is this best left to AV. Also, I think that may have disabled my firewall while downloading. Would this have had an affect?

Sorry for all the questions. Appreciate the help.

P.S. I am not actually a virgin, nor and I from Alaska. It is a pretty lame political joke that probably only Bob and Tom listners will get. It is what happens when they decide to add P. Rico as the 51st state but then decide to combine some states to avoid having to add another star to the flag. They decide to combine states. Indiana and Kansas...Indias...get it...I know...not funny...but then a Senator (Bob Packwood or Ted Kennedy type I believe) ask about combining Alaska and Virgina...Alaskavirgin...of course there are no virgins in the Senate...hence the joke. Again, I know it really isn't funny unless you are a political juncky. You know...Ted Kennedy saying that he will ALASKAVIRGIN...but of course he can't find any in the Senate... I'll quit while I am ahead.

I'm probably not appropriate to answer your questions. I notice I posted a response to your earlier thread about 'unwanted downloads...virus?' I don't know if these will help but it might be worth viewing these following threads: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...hreadid=27476, & http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...hreadid=27397, & http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...hreadid=26605, & http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=26903 Hope these have some helpful suggestions. Great joke!

Ran AV...Found Virues!!!

OK...I have learnt a lesson...scan all downloads. I ran an AV today and found literally dozens of viruses. My guess is that this is why I was having the problems I was having. I literally dozens of infected files...despite my efforts to delete what I thought were the infected files. Here are some of the viruses my AV found...

worm_bagle.AH
TROJ_INOR.A
TROJ_GLITCH.B
TROJ_SMALL.LI
WORM_CYDOG.B

Anybody know anything about any of these? There were others but I just quit counting and writing them down. Any thoughts on this compromising any financial data? I have online accounts with my CCs. Will defanently monitor them and look out for bad charges.

I will never download without scanning the files again.

Is there anyone to report this to? I assume this is criminal?

Any thoughts about restoring my system? The AV is current but does this guarentee that the problem is gone?

Thanks for the help..

VIRUSES

Get yourself a good antivirus program and here is the most important thing... Set your AV program to scan ALL INCOMING FILES whether through your e-mail or LW, etc. I get an occaisional hit but my AV won't even let the file in so it cna do any damage. LW also has the ability to scan for viruses but you have to set the switch. I do both plus I scan my DL folder one more time before I open it. Yes it is redundant but better to be safe than sorry. Still, you seem to get an inordinate amount of viruses. I have been with LW about 4 months and have maybe been hit three to four times. If you want to avoid the porn you can filter out keywords in the options section of LW. This will block much but not all of the files because some idiots insist on mislabeling files and if they catch one unintentionally just keep passing it on. I got a little lazy a week ago and checked a bunch of comics for my kids before letting them view and of course the one I didn't check turned out to not be the famous webslinger but a bunch of manga porn cartoons. That took some explaining (lol). I hope this helps. Best of luck. If you need help in setting switches or AV advice you can PM me and I'll get back to youo as soon as I can. CJ

NORTON AV

I reformatted my harddrive last night and installed NORTON. Hopefully this will take care of my problems.

Thanks you help on this. I do appreciate CJ.

NORTON

And you to Lord of the Rings...thank you very much!!!

Well certainly drastic but efficient measures. Well done. Make sure you keep you filters in LW with .exe added & ignore adult content ticked, & as
chicagojohn recommended to keep your AV, adaware, etc softwares active whilst u use LW. It is strange u should've been hit so hard. If u have xp it might well be worth seting up a firewall as
chicagojohn would happily recommend u to do & probably even tell u how w/o affecting LW's efficiency.

Lambda 62 detected

I was downloading on Limewire today and it detected " /\ 62 " (lambda-62?) in an .avi. Is this a virus? I'm having trouble finding any relevant information...

If you don't know what is, especially if it is embedded in another file, treat it as "hostile", chances are it is not there to do you any good.
