Help! Need questions answered please

I am a rookie at this and can't seem to find the answers to some of my questions, please help. 1- for some reason I went from "turbo charge" to "fair" when I am connected to Limewire and it seems to take forever to download songs. 2- not knowing at the time, I downloaded 2 songs that were bad (there is skipping throughout the songs) and everytime I try to delete them so nobody can download them it does'nt allow me, I don't want people getting upset at me because I am trying! 3- will it hurt me to have so many downloads in my share file? 4- why when I go to "monitor" I cannot see anything where it says "0 active, 0 queued" 5- why cant i chat w/ anyone? 6- when I look to see "incomming searches", users have names, I don't think I have one and where do I go to put my name in? Sorry there are so many questions, there will probably be more but I would really appreciate anyone's help right now. Thank you for taking the time, it's greatly appreciated. newbee

1. The net traffic is constantly varying as people log on/off or start/finish dwnlding material. This can affect connections. Make sure u have your LW properly configured for best results. If people are dwnlding from you, then you'll get better connection. This question has many variables to its reasons. It might also be due to local traffic on your local ip or the reliability of your ip itself.

2. (a) If you're using LW to play your songs, then yes there may be some skipping on occasions. It might also depend on the type of mp3's you're trying to play thru LW's player. Get a hold of another mp3 player to play your songs. (b) If you want to delete files you are sharing, there's 2 ways: Select the shared folder in the Library window of LW. The items inside will be displayed to the right. Then select the file u wich to delete & press the Delete button. Or you should quit LW 1st & then select the file & send it to the recycle bin.

3. No it won't do any harm. In fact, some users won't allow others to dwnld from them unless they are sharing a minimum no. of files. Sometimes this no. can be quite high.

4. That means nobody is uploading from you. Check your uploading prefs: go to LW's menu Tools-Options & Uploads. Check your settings for both Basic (speed to allow people to upload from you) & Slots. Make sure uploads is set to 'at least' one. Depending on your type of connection, you can have several people upload from you simultaneously. If people are uploading from you, your connection & search results will greatly improve! This can be related to your Q.1!

5. LW Pro users have the best options of chatting with other people! For LW basic, I 'think' u can only chat with people uploading from you. Go to your LW menu Tools-Options & Chat. Make sure this option to chat is ticked! Keep in mind: that not everybody has this option ticked, users are a mixture of pro & basic & other p2p apps, not everybody wants to chat, not everybody sits at their computer whilst using p2p apps. They might leave it on whilst they go out such as to work or overnight whilst they sleep.

6. I don't know about Q6. I'm not sure if LW has that option yet.

Thank You!

Thank you so much Lotr, I did all the things you said and instantly went from "fair" to "excellent". Your opinion please; I changed my account so that you need to have at least 20 sharing files enable to download from me, was that a good number? In reading a lot of things written on here I find that a lot of people are very upset about others not sharing, "freeloaders". I also set my options to "rarely". Do you agree w/ this or should I set the limit higher? Thank you again, even after my screw-up yesterday you still came back to help me, I truly appreciate it. Newbee

Glad to hear things have improved! 20 is a good no. Personally I use 50 & likewise. Now you can relax & enjoy yourself.

one more ?

Changed mine to 50 also, you know better than I. One more question then I'll stop bothering you, at least for tonight =). How many "uploads per person" should I set mine on? It is on 10 right now, I'm not sure if that is too much or too little. Thank you!Newbee

That really depends on your connection & upload capability. For dial-up users, it affects their overall bandwidth (as far as I know.) Whereas for most others, it depends on the connection type & upload capability according to their particular account they hold. So without knowing what your upload capability is it's difficult to suggest anything (if you're not sure, ask your ip provider.) Besides, I'm presently a dial-up user (dare I say it) so I'm not the best person to ask.(By the way, I've been offline doing work - so the later reply.)

I lied! I need your help! PLEASE!

I'm so sorry, I just can't figure things out and there is nowhere on her (at least that I could'nt find) that can answer my questions and when I try to chat w/ someone who is downloading from me, they stop the chat, you're the only one that has helped me, I know you're probably very busy and I'm sorry, but you ARE the Lord of the Rings are you not? You're supposed to help the helpless right? =) Just look at it like your little newbee project. hahahaha. Please, I need you! Newbee

Thank You!

I totally messed up then, I put it at 50 cause my "uploads per person" is 100. Also, well wait, I should tell you I have cable internet, when I go to monitor, I see a lot of users getting a message that their download was interrupted. I'm trying to do the best that I can to share files, but I think people might be getting upset w/ me because this keeps happening. I also don'y understand the whole "hits" thing. I have about 20 of them that have been hit over 100 times, what does that mean? Thank you so much for helping, nobody would help me before then Lotr actually wrote in to help for the first time. If I can just ask the questions and learn, maybe I can help someone else who is new at this let alone new at the entire computer thing like I am. So again, any help is greatly appreciated. Newbee

I am soooo sorry!

I never meant to insult you or anyone, that was not what I meant at all, PLEASE forgive me if that is how you felt or if that was the impression I gave. I meant from people in the chat rooms on LW that would download stuff from me or even on the net, I actually just found you guys last night by accident, please a thousand times forgive me. And yes, Lotr was great in helping me out, I even screwed up on how to contact him and he was nice enough to go through the steps w/ me, and you were nice enough to help me also. Please, I'm just a wife and mother and listening to music is the only reason why I'm even attempting this stuff, music, it's what keeps me going, and sain in a house of all boys! =) My husband tries to help me as much as possible but finding time to sit and explain, well, it's not possible a whole lot. Again I am so sorry I made you think and feel that way, I honestly do hope that you can forgive me. Newbee

Thanks

Seriously, this forum, you and lotr have saved me a few times, I was not doing anything right. I don't think any of you are loosers, I could only ever hope of knowing how to do all this computer stuff! I'm still at the point where if I'm not sure about something I won't touch it! My husband laughs cause I won't let any of the boys touch the computer until he gets home=) And you're right, I have 3 nieces and I love them to death but even after 3 days of visiting, I'm glad I had all boys! =) And again, I meant no harm or insult to anyone or this forum, how big the internet is, this was the first place where someone even contacted me back, and I've been trying to do this for weeks now! I'd appreciate knowing I could ask and maybe you can answer if possible in the near future w/ more questions that I'm sure I will have, and I hope you take a look at my shared files sometime, in my opinion I've got some great ones, a little of this and that, I love the variety! Again, thanks a lot, Newbee
