Feel Safer Not Sharing

How am I able not to share? I need more info on this...

1) If I don't share, does that mean I can't download any more songs?

2) How exactly do I disconnect sharring?

(It's not that I am greedy...I used Limewire since February 2004, and I got a couple of viruses from it...about 180 of them...so I feel safer if I don't share.)

Better still, get yourself a good anti-virus software! There's plenty out there & some are free. You can set it to scan all incoming files. For Windows that is wise management & very unwise not to if you use the internet for anything.

Make sure u set your Filters up to get rid of the nonsense out of your search results. Eg- Go to LW's menu Tools-Options & Filters. Tick all of the filter search types. In the Keyword section (depending on what types of files u normally dwnld) add the words: .exe .wmv .jpg These keyword filters can be added/deleted anytime.

If you don't share files you will incur: worse connections (uplding to others enable you to connect to more peers & thus improve your search & dwnld results & speeds.) Some people filter out people who are freeloaders & share less than a certain no. of files. This no. might be 5, 10, 20, 50, 500 or more. So you will be reducing greatly the no. of sources you'll be able to dwnld from.

Do a search on the forum for these words: 'freeloader', & also 'sharing'.

To not share, go to LW's menu Tools-Options & Sharing & highlight the folders listed & press Remove & press the Apply & ok buttons.

Heck it must have taken me a long time to write my post. Sorry Peerless.

If nobody shares there is no way to download your songs, you want to download files so share yours. btw the most countries are also sueing you for downloading songs, so there is really no reason to stop sharing.

This is kinda on and off the track of this discussion but here goes. I only turn sharing on, on Sundays and Mondays. The reason I do this, is because I do not know how to set up the upload folder to be different than the download folder. I always test my downloads, as I get a few that are incomplete, wrong names, don’t work at all, or just so messy that I wouldn’t want them. I would rather find one that is good to share than someone waste 17 hours on something they don’t want. All my downloads are games or movies so they take time to get. I do not want to share something I don’t know works and if I find out that it doesn’t, I cannot delete it if someone is downloading it. I am new to all this, I have always shared my files on IRC, where I have total control. Should I share all the time? Is there a way to set the folders to be different? Am I freeloading even though I do share?

I presume you're using windows. If so, then you should know how things work! To know what your shared folders are & to add any others, go to LW's menu Tools-Options & Sharing. This will list the folders you're presently sharing & there's an Add button if you wanted to add more shared folders.

You can safely remove items out of the shared folders if LW is not open. Likewise, if you decided to share your dwnld folder (Tools-Options-Saving to know which one this is), then you can add it the way suggested above. Again u could safely remove items if LW is not open (else check the monitor window to see if anybody is uplding the particular file from it.)

p2p is all about sharing. If people choose not to share for whatever reason, then it makes the Gnutella netwk much less effective. Less alternative choices for people to dwnld from. It affects U just as it affects everybody else. Imagine if everyone was a freeloader. There'd BE no files to dwnld. Also it might have already been mentioned in this thread, but many people filter out those who share less than a certain no. of files be that 5, 10, 50, 100, or 500+. As a freeloader you'd only be able to dwnld from them on those days you decided to share. But then being inconsistent means you'd have difficulty reconnecting to them. Also not having people uplding from U means you will miss out on links to other peers & your search results, connection quality & speeds will suffer.

Thank you, I now have different folders set up and sharing is on. LW stays on 6 days a week. I use one day to scan and defrag. Thank you for your help.

That sounds like a good setup. Glad to see you take care of both your files, HDD & OS health. Pity more people didn't take those things more seriously & keep their system in order so it's quick to find & fix any probs.
