Why the little squares instead of words?

LOL hahahahhhahahhahaha!!!! It's the language you have it set to. I'm sure you don't speak the language of the 'SQUARES'! lol Go to the LW menu & what should be the 2nd lw menu item from the left choose (possible with a (v) after it, is the View menu & scroll down to 'Change languuage' (the very last option in the list & choose english. You WILL NEED to quit LW & re-open for the change to take effect! The land of the squares. Speak the square language.

I don't know about the homey reference, I don't have 'anything' against gays but I'd prefer to stay away from any such reference. Happy to help all the same! I have friends who are gay but although I 'ain't' I like to be able to be accepted within both modes. Perhaps it's just a touchy top for someone from my background. Gone walkabout! The spirits called!

Back on topic -- the next version of LimeWire will not allow someone to choose a language which is all boxes, and if that language somehow does get chosen it will not allow LimeWire to be displayed in that language, instead reverting to English. So that means you'll never see boxes again.

How about some crazy funky function that will make LW detect the defaul language settings on the PC and put them as default (reverting to default prefs would also restore the language settings)

LimeWire will already do that. In the case of the boxes, though, it'll revert to English because some people default language on the PC is wrong (and would cause the boxes).
