windows media player

I have problems with video playback. It would seem that windows media is the default player. The error messsage that I am receiving says .."windows media player cannot play files one or more codecs required to play the file could not be found."I have downloaded several codecs and codec packages and so far no luck. Can I change players and possibly solve my problem?Any other suggestions?
thanks

Many users have several players as a back up. they may also set some of these as defalt to play particular video formats such as mpeg or avi-divx, etc. Here's a player that has in-built codecs & plays almost everything except the odd wmv file: VLC (a free player) & choose the nearest mirror site to there you live. It's not the prettiest player & its controls are rather basic but it's an all in one player that reliably plays most things including dvd's & vcd's. Happy watching! :)

Your problem is for either of 2 reasons. 1. You're not pressing the Apply button when you make your changes within LW. Untick LW's media player. (Perhaps you do need to wait until LW re-opens I'm not sure.) 2. You haven't set your default player correctly. For each particular type of file, select it on your desktop or wherever (but not within LW), & go to File>Properties & Open with ... & select your app. to open it with. eg: For AVI you might select VLC to play it, but for WMV & mpeg you might select WMP, etc. Same applies for music. There's many types of mp3's. You might want some to open with WMP but some others to open with QCD (Quintessential Player: a free player with built-in codecs that plays all mp3 types)

video playback

Thanks Lord of the Rings for your reply....I was able to watch a video download using Windows Media 10.The video was an AVI file and it played just fine yet another video with the same type of file(AVI) would not???I have attempted to use the VLC player and it seems to play most music videos w/o a problem but it did have an issue with the AVI file videos. Any other suggestions???Thanks

If neither wmp or VLC can play an avi file then that's a mofor worry. It may well be corruptl VLC is generally up to date with the newest forms of video formats out there incl. avi variations. That is odd!!! The best I could suggest is to dwnld the divx player & some other codecs: 1. DivX, 2. XviD, 3. 3ivx , etc.

Other than that is to dwnld other players & codecs.

No need to download other PLAYERS just download the codecs you need... all players are able to play all videos. You might only have problems with the "special" formats from Apple or Mickysoft like .wmp.

LOTR already posted some links. If you need also codecs for other formats you can look here:
