Q about LimeWire...

Hi,

I am a longtime LimeWire user, highly recommend it. I've tried using other p2p's, particularly emule and Shareaza, and they all have port forwarding/other issues when I use them (the ports appear closed on connection tests). I have never had these kinds of problems with LW (at least that I'm aware of, the searches and downloads seem fine). Why the difference? Wouldn't I expect to have these same types of issues with LW?

The newer versions of LW are designed to connect moe easily. Well actually if you use NAT devices such as modem/routers then these will limit your incoming requests - mostly for uplds. So you may require port forwarding for ideal performance. What brand names of modem & router do you use?

LOR,

Thanks for the fast reply!! Sorry about that,

Win 98 SE
Zyxel 642M-11 DSL

I wasn't even aware that this modem was also a router, until I ran the ipconfig and saw the 192.168.x.x. (I still have trouble connecting to it via telnet for some reason to do the forwarding).

The difference b/t LW and the others is huge. For a given search I'll get 10x as many hits as with Shareaza (on Gnutella) and emule. You think I should forward it anyway for LW (is there a conx test for LW)? I'm perhaps not maximizing it?

I couldnt find your specific model per se but some similar models I suspect that will probably have similar instructions. At the very bottom-right of the following page you'll find models of Zyxel listed. Click on model no.(s) links in brown text that are most similar. This will take you to another page & choose the link in brown text called 'Port Forwarding for the ZyXEL ...' You'll need to set up a static ip but a link to the instructions will be there: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm Use Port 6346
I did also find this but probably not needed: Search results for port forwarding ZyXEL 642M-11

You will also need to Force IP within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image

This will give LW full access & not just partial. Some hints on optimising LW: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints.

LOR,

These links are great. I'll try to work it through to give LW full access.

Thanks a lot!
