I don't know the answer to that question. In earlier versions of LW there was a specific Browse Host button. There was also by default the little sun that indicated a host had chat enabled. But then when I updated from LW 2 to LW 4 this had disappeared. It took me ages to find out how to chat with someone. Also the chat display column needs to be set from right-clicking for windows or control-click for mac ontop of the column bar.

Late edit: Some more on Setting up Chat (click on link)

ok let me put that another way: How can i browse a host with their id number?

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 11:23 AM

But you don't need their id no. in order to browse them. Just right-click the file & select Browse Host. Or are you refering to direct connecting with them? Which I guess is very similar. You could try this by obtaining their id from the list. And adding the port no. & hope they use port 6346. Actually LW seems to add the port no. for you.

How do i do that?

In the search results you will see their id no. Just add it to your direct connect search type.

I should have told you how to find direct connect. It helps if you have LW 4.2

thx for info but i have the virsion before that. how do i up grade and still keepmy files??

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 03:17 PM

No problem. Use the Remove function from Add/Remove control panel. Then install the new version. It won't remove your shared folders. And your preferences should also remain the same. More particularly your incompletes will still be there. Just make sure you have a reasonably update version of Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link)

THE-MANZ December 9th, 2004 03:19 PM

thx for the help.:)

THE-MANZ December 9th, 2004 03:39 PM

ok how do i know what my id # is? so i can be at a friends and get stuff off my share folder? and when i direct connect does the other person have to say yes?

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 03:50 PM

Select Direct Connect Search type & it will show you your id no. But you need to find out what your friends id no.'s are. Once you know, you can type tht no. onto the box. For direct connecting it's best to try to make sure you & your friend have an available slot. So make sure you're not too busy upldlding & dwnlding at that time. It may even help if you both have Chat function enabled (Tools>Options>Chat & tick option box & press apply button.)

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 04:18 PM

You mean your version doesn't tell you. It does on the mac version of LW 4.2 Another quick & easy way is to go here: http://www.whatismyip.com/

THE-MANZ December 9th, 2004 04:23 PM

thx that help. i have windows not mac. i think thats all i need.thx for the help....:D

Bicep January 18th, 2005 08:38 AM

im trying to use whatismyip but the ip doesnt work in direct connect, pissin me off. no direct connects are working!!!!!! AHHH

sberlin January 18th, 2005 08:52 AM

LimeWire will only show your IP address in the 'Direct Connect' screen if it detects you can receive incoming connections. Not everyone is capable of being browsed (firewalls, etc..), so not all direct connects will work.

Bicep January 18th, 2005 09:00 AM

it shows me my ip, but when my friend enters it it wont work. my ip is different thatn what it was last time :S confusing, it says once 192.168.1.33:6348 hmmm

Lord of the Rings January 18th, 2005 09:10 AM

You have a dynamic ip. Probably have a NAT firewall also. Chances of your friend connecting to you without port forwarding are probably minimal.

Bicep January 18th, 2005 09:19 AM

whats port forwarding then? id do anything to let him get my stuff, theres so much for him to get

Lord of the Rings January 18th, 2005 09:24 AM

Port forwarding is about opening a port for LW which is port 6346. Net games & video conferencing also need this type of thing except they require many more ports to be opened.

You will need to tell us your modem & router brand names & model numbers. You'll also need to set up a static ip for it to be successful.

Please answer this question in a separate thread. We are starting to change topic now! ;)
