What's wrong with LimeWire 1.3/1.4 ?

When I had my first encounter with LimeWire 1.2 about a month ago, i was amazed how many results it reported, how many hosts it discovered and how many terabytes of data i was able to search in (up to 1500 TB). But since upgrading to 1.3, those happy days seem to have vanished in haze. The greatest horizon i ever got was 55 TB, but a normal size is about 30 TB. Note that I get this network size using LimeWire Discovered Hosts feature. When I enable "Prefer AutoConnect", i won't get over 9 TBs. The absolute minimum was about 950 Megs today. I was almost sharing more data nmyself than i was able to discover throug the net. The situation remained the same after upgrading to 1.4 and 1.4b (by the way, what is actually the difference between those versions except the disappearing of the NativeLauncher dll in the PureJava version ?) I am a kind of java fanatic and use the PureJava Version, but i also tried the windows version and the results were the same. If anybody out there has a reasonable explanation for this dramatical loss of performance please post it. I am no longer able to find anything in the gNet.

Nevertheless the situation improves dramatically after having "Prefer AutoConnect" disabled. This way I get connected to three times as many hosts and files. Is this really due to the change in the way LimeWire handles messages now?

PS: I am curious. What is the difference between LimeWire 1.4 and 1.4b ? I couldn't fins anything about 1.4b anywhere on the LimeWire WebSite or on the net. However, I've noticed the NativeLauncher.dll vanishing and i'm quite glad about this (pure java shall rule).

Well, Afisk, I think I donīt get the point... iu mean that maybe Abaris has in his/her list of discovered hosts some servers that have been on the network longer than the ones you provide by default?!?!? Uhh ?? Werenīt gnutellahosts.com and router.limewire.com supposed to be the most used in the gnutella network due , precisely, to the fact that they ARE the default servers in the connection list????
Man, you gotta explain this a bit more, I donīt get it.

If I may jump in and take a poke at this: The Limewire FAQ mentions that the longer you stay connected, and after you prove your bandwidth capabilities, you will be moved towards the centre of the network. Moving to the centre of the network and getting more connections would happen naturally the longer you're connected, of course. But the FAQ mentions that there's something new about V1.0 that facilitates this. Maybe router.limewire.com is giving you rookie connections intentionally at first (based on an uptime report from you?), whereas successful connections to hosts in an old Discovered Hosts list would naturally give you aged hosts.

On a completely seperate topic, is there a bug in 1.4b relating to the Incomplete folder(s)? Cuz they're really getting on my nerves! A folder is created in the installation dir, my c:\ root, and where I want to save my files. This seems to happen only when I don't have a \ (or, in the raw .props file, \\) on the end of my SAVE_DEFAULT or DIRECTORY_FOR_SAVING_FILES.

Editing this file, "fixing" it, making it read-only, then running LimeWire, is funny: LimeWire refuses to quit unless is has permissions to screw up that file! http://forums.gnutelliums.com/smile.gif

I'm not sure if this is a bug, which is why I posted it here. Win2k.

Dunno but Limewire just plain kicks *** to me.

Yeah, I noticed that too... quite strange. I'm also having trouble finding files, since most of the files I search for are quite rare.

I heard KaZaA is a good alternative, but it's been rumored that they're gonna switch to a pay service (looks like somebody's jumping on Napster's bandwagon). My friend has KaZaA and he loves it, but I've been using the gNet for quite some time, so I've grown to trust it and I don't think I could switch over to another network just yet. Besides, all my friend uses KaZaA for is to get porn... what a wanker http://forums.gnutelliums.com/biggrin.gif
