Go to your LW menu Tools>Options>Saving & select the folder you wish to save to. If it is as the default which would be Shared, then re-choose that one & press the Apply button. If this doesn't work then it might be an idea to delete your LW preferences folder. See: Fixes for Limewire

Salcas January 19th, 2005 04:18 PM

ok that didnt work (the first thing) now i dont understand how to do the second thing, i went into the link an i really dont understand anything, would you be able to explain it to me...by deleting that folder, will that affect any of my songs? or anything else? Thanks

Lord of the Rings January 19th, 2005 04:42 PM

LW's downld prefs are stored in the incomplete folder in a file called downld.dat. So deleting the main LW prefs will not affect them. It just means the next time you open LW you will be asked the basic questions about where you wich to downld your files to, etc.

Updating LW is extremely important b/c LW is designed using Java & designed for the latest versions of Java so if you have it it will operate more efficiently & faster.

Salcas January 19th, 2005 05:05 PM

Ok, how do i delete my prefenerence folder? Can YOU explain it to me please. Thank You

Lord of the Rings January 19th, 2005 05:09 PM

Without knowing which operating system you're using. I'll guess that you're using windows. Use your operating system search engine to search for .limewire Then click on the folder it belongs to. Open it. Then drag/send the .limewire folder to the recycle bin. Then try re-opening LW.

If you're using mac, you'd better tell me quick smart. And which os version.

In fact can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version, 2. What firewalls you have, 3. ram, 4. HDD space available, 5. Connection type, 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers, 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?

I have windows and i just did what you told me but it still happens...an it also asks me if i want to discard the "bug" or send it...i have no clue whats going on...any other ideas?

Lord of the Rings January 19th, 2005 05:30 PM

1. Has this only been happening during this session of using LW? If yes, then I'd suggest restarting your comp. If it's not, then I'd suggest you lclena up your system using utility apps & defragging your hdd.

2. Change the location of your LW downld folder. Go to Tools>Options>Saving & choose a new location. You may need to move your files from your incomplete folder to the new incomplete folder.

Are you sure you have admin rights to your computer? If yes then do the give LW the admin rights as in the sugestion in the earlier link.

Even try setting up a new user account. On which you have control over. Try using LW within that account.

I have the EXACT same problem and have tried all of your suggestions to no avail. I am using Windows XP.

Salcas January 19th, 2005 09:09 PM

How long have you had this problem for? Its bugging me!

sberlin January 19th, 2005 09:19 PM

We've noticed a rash of these bugs coming in. There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason.

A few things to check:

- How long is the path to your incomplete/save directory?
- If you shorten the path (C:\Files\Saved) does it start working?
- What drive is the save directory on?
- Is the save directory on an internal or external drive?

We'd very much like to fix this problem. Any help you can give in tracking it down would be very useful.

Lord of the Rings January 19th, 2005 09:22 PM

Do you use iTunes? If not switch off your daap abilities you don't need it.

Are you sure you installed the english version LW or the international (multilingual) version installer. The international version demands Java 1.3 be used. But your Java is showing unknown source...

Try installing the Beta version 4.3.2 (preferably into a different account) http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml

Oh I'm a bit slow

Salcas January 20th, 2005 12:43 PM

Ok, im not sure how to shorten my path...would you explain? My saved file is in c:/documents and settings/Sal Castellano/Shared. Yes i do have i-tunes. I also downloaded the beta version of limewire but it still does not work. And yes i do have the english version. Is this problem ever going to be fixed? If not im going to have to switch to something else an see if that works, which i do not want to because limewire was awsome up to know. Thank You

sberlin January 20th, 2005 12:53 PM

Hi Salcas,

Yes, this problem will be fixed, but we need to be able to reproduce it first. That's why I'm asking these questions -- so we can figure out what's causing the problem, reproduce it, and fix it.

- Do you have many files that you are downloading?
- Does the problem appear when you click on a search result to start downloading, or only after you've restarted LimeWire and it resumes old downloads?
- Does the problem appear with every single download, or only some of them?
- If it appears with only some of them, what do those downloads have in common? Are the names really long?
- If it appears with all of them, try downloading some files that have very short names. Does it still fail?

- Have you ever been able to download succesfully?
- If so, did you do anything between when it worked and it didn't? Such as upgrading Java, installing a new program, upgrading Windows (using Windows Update), etc... ?

Sorry for the lots of questions. I've been trying to search for this problem and reproduce it for the past few hours, and haven't had any luck.

Salcas January 20th, 2005 01:21 PM

Hi, I have about 900 songs in my saved file. The problem started yesterday when i went into limewire it said that i have a bug an that the song that i tryed downloading could not be moved to my library, and it asked me to send the bug or discard it and i sent it. Ive tried downloading many files an the same problem happens with every single one. I have not installed anything from when the problem started. Ever since yesterday ive been downloading succesfully. i hope i answered you questions and you can help..thanks

Salcas January 20th, 2005 01:29 PM

actually coem to think of it, i downloaded the newer version of java in between when it was working an wasnt becuase i thought that maybe that would fix the problem but it didnt

sberlin January 20th, 2005 01:54 PM

To get a clear timeline of events:

1) LimeWire downloads files fine.
2) Java is upgraded.
3) LimeWire fails downloading files.

Is that the order?

Or is the order:

A) LimeWire downloads files fine.
B) LimeWire fails downloading files.
C) Java is upgraded.
D) LimeWire still fails downloading files.

I can't quite tell from your post.

Try going to Tools -> Options, choosing 'Saving' and changing your 'Save Directory'.

Salcas January 20th, 2005 02:23 PM

A) LimeWire downloads files fine.
B) LimeWire fails downloading files.
C) Java is upgraded.
D) LimeWire still fails downloading files.

thats the order.

i already tried that an i did not work

sberlin January 20th, 2005 02:32 PM

How many files are in the 'Incomplete' directory? To find this out, follow these steps:
- Click on the Library tab.
- Click on the 'Incomplete' folder.
- Click on the 'Explore' button.
This should open up Windows Explorer. In Explorer:
- Click the button at the top that is an green up arrow on a folder.
- Right-click on the 'Incomplete' folder and choose 'Properties'.

The dialog box that comes up will show 'Size', 'Size on Disk' and 'Contains'. What are the values of those things?

Also right-click on the 'Shared' folder and choose 'Properties'. What does that say?

Also, how much free space is left on the computer and what kind of format is the drive? To find this out:
- Click the green up arrow on the folder continuously until it is grayed out.
- Double click on 'My Computer'.
- Click once on "Local Disk (C:)".
On the left should be a box that says "Details". If there's nothing listed below that, click once on the double arrows pointing down.

You should see stuff that says: "File System", "Free Space" and "Total Space". What is the file system, free space, and total space?

Once again, I apologize for the ton of questions. We're working hard to figure out what's causing this bug. It appeared literally out of the blue, and we're not sure why.

Salcas January 20th, 2005 03:10 PM

Ok here it is... The size in the incomplete folder is 24.4 MB (25,682,698 bytes), the size on disk is 24.5 MB (25,739,264 bytes), and it contains 34 files and 0 folders.

The size of the "shared folder" is 4.12 GB (4,425,763,605 bytes), and the size on disk is 4.12 GB (4,427,591,680 bytes), and it contains 898 files and 70 folders.

And lastly, the c drive's file system is NTFS, the free space is 22.7 GB and the total space is 37.2 GB.

I hope i answered all you questions.

sberlin January 20th, 2005 03:50 PM

Those answers were very helpful, thanks Salcas.

Few more questions --

- Do you have any Anti Virus or Firewall programs running?
- If so, can you disable them and try running LimeWire again?

- Do you remember doing any Windows Updates recently? Perhaps just before the errors starting happening?

Thanks much for your help.

Salcas January 20th, 2005 03:57 PM

Hi, I do have a virus protector which is panda and i just disabled it but nothings new limewire is still giving me the same 'ol problems. I have a feeling ill never get this fixed. And no i didnt run any windows updates.

sberlin January 20th, 2005 04:01 PM

Hi Salcas,

It isn't going to be fixed overnight, but it will be fixed. I promise.

We've spent all day looking into what could be causing it and why it could be happening. We have some ideas as to how to fix it, and we're going to try and release a version with those ideas added.

I'm sorry we can't do anything immediately to fix it. I am as stumped as you as to why things just suddenly stopped working.

Salcas January 20th, 2005 04:03 PM

ok no problem but just keep me posted

spiralised January 20th, 2005 04:03 PM

help!!having exactly the same problem! just started suddenly today. tried everything said earlier in this thread but still no joy.help please!

sberlin January 20th, 2005 04:12 PM

I've created a sticky thread at http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...905#post115905 .

Please answer the questions in that thread, and hopefully we can figure out what's causing this problem.

(Salcas, you already answered most of these, so you can just use that thread for updates on the situation.)

Salcas January 20th, 2005 04:26 PM

I havent shortened my path yet, how do i do that?

Salcas January 20th, 2005 04:33 PM

ill be back in a little bit

Salcas January 20th, 2005 05:35 PM

ok im back, sberlin , how do i shorten my path?

sberlin January 20th, 2005 05:44 PM

You can just choose a path for the saved folder that isn't as long. Something like C:\Saved.

I'm going home for the night -- need a good rest. My eyes hurt. :(

If you could post results in the sticky thread in 'Download / Upload Problems', that'll make it easier to consolidate things.

Thanks.
