the free ipod scumbag

would anybody else like to join me in my mission to hunt down the s.o.b who has littered the community with those crappy free ipod ads?

Salcas January 29th, 2005 09:45 AM

Ya i know, i always get that stupid ad when i go to play a movie which is fake.

Pombar January 29th, 2005 09:48 AM

Oh yeah!!!(remember kids, with exclamation marks, it's one or none!)
But basically if the file size looks too small to be true(or too big to be true), don't be fooled. Also, there's this one that appears as a WMV or something like that, and it's file name is always just what you type, so watch out for them.
I don't think there's any feasable way to 'catch' this person, though. Just block that IP address(the FAQ tells you how to do this) if they annoy you so much.

How big in size are those ipods ads? Never seen one yet.

Those T1 sources that litter with spam use dynamic ip's so if you block them one day, the next they'll have a different ip address & some unlucky sucker has adopted that ip address that's blocked! Keep that in mind. Why not just filter out wmv until you need it or ignore those under a certain size. Go LW menu Tools>Options>Filters>Keyword & type in wmv & press the Add button & then the Apply button. Filters can be added or removed anytime so long as you press the Apply button.

Worth a read if you don't like reading: Quality of Content on the Network and Fake movies & why and wmv rubbish and A Curious Thing Happened... and XXAA is watching, SPAMing the network, proof and That's All Folks for now but there's plenty of similar threads if you wish to search for them. :D

Got the pitchfork?

LotR has good advice. Ignore those with same file name as the search string, T1, small file size, etc.

Or direct complaints to:
(I apologize to the Mods if this is inappropriate).

Hi guys, I just joined the forum hoping someone could tell me about this idiot with the fake movies and his ads.
This morning I finally found one of his ads with only 1 "host" so I could "Browse the Host". This guy has nothing but these ads and they have 17412 of them with different titles! IP is shown as 38.112.89.140:6349.

ipod Hits

It seems that the iPod villian(s) are using some form of macro that, upon getting a search query from Limewire, generate a response with the very title of the document(s) for which we are searching. I believe that the better approach for us, rather than trying to search down these individuals and shove an iPod down their throat in a rage of vengeance, would be for those clever programmers who created Limewire to add a feature that would allow us to short circuit the villians ... specifically, maybe we could have a button that allows us to exclude from search results, all files that are in the range of 91K to 107K (for example), and with the ability for us as users to modify the parameters in the event that the iPod villians start tweaking their ads to be larger or smaller in size. If the Limewire moderator is monitoring this thread, I implore them to forward this suggestion to those who might be able to assist us in resolving this issue. Thank you.
