Can't play download!!!

I just downloaded a movie in avi format and I can't get it to play. The download is complete. The error message states "unable to recognize the format of this file"
Can anyone help me.

Do you have to correct codec installed on your pc to play it?
Do a search if you don't have FFDSHOW installed on your pc and install and run it.
