Default problems with opening avi files--need codex?

Hi!

I'm new at the whole file-sharing thing. One thing I've noticed is that when I try to dowload an avi file, I can't seem to play it in quicktime--there's the soun track but no video. I'm thinking I need to download a component but which one and how?

Thanks...

a.

Yeah I know what you mean. Dunno if they are just crappy/inferior files but to get around this problem, I use Mplayer for files that don't seem to work in Quicktime or others. Mplayer isn't that great but sure is handy.
Do a google for mplayer in whatever system you're using and download it. Originally a linux program, they have one for OS X, probly for windows to.

Open up QT's preferences & press Update tab & select Find & install new 3rd party softw. Other codecs of help will be DivX go to http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/ & also 3ivx http://www.3ivx.com/ & go to dwnld page & look on top right of page.
Worthwhile also getting a backup player like VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (choose nearest mirror site)

Thanks for your reply!

I actually found a program at downloads.com that seems to work--VLC. Do you know anything about it?

Cheers Lord of the Rings, will do.
Used VLC player couple of years ago and wasn't impressed. May be better now as I don't use a dinosaur machine anymore. Will look at too.
