LimeWire LLC 'likely' to stop distributing gnutella client

"Mark Gorton, the chief executive of the Lime Group, a brokerage firm that makes LimeWire, a file-sharing alternative to Grokster, said he was likely to stop distributing LimeWire in reaction to the ruling."

No offense, but that sounds like anticipatory obedience. Or does LimeWire have a guilty conscience? The sentence didn't declare P2P or filesharing as illegal at all.

LimeWire has no comment:

But if I had a shitload of money to be sued for, like say - LimeWire CEO & owner -, I wouldn't exactly want to go down that road...

Dissolution of LW LLC would not kill LW itself but would slow down its development tremendously and it would loose its leadership on many fronts IMO. I'm sure there are ways for LW LLC to survive with current court order, the lawyers will have to find ways.

RIAA and MPAA are so idiotic about innovations, that'll cause their deaths soon.

LimeWire's main competitors (azureus and emule) are both open-source projects and all the companies are busy with lawsuits.

There's a pretty good chance a LimeWire open-source project will remain popular. Loosing the limewire.com domain would hurt, though...

They could give the domain to a non profit organisation that could mirror to limewire.sourceforge.net. Anyway, seems everybody at LW is either sick, on vacancies or just plain death: we will see soon. I mean the first companies that should be concerned are Morpheus and Grokster: especially since they aren't open source.

sourceforge.net is in the U.S. - maybe it's not a good idea to move there...

et voilą June 28th, 2005 01:27 PM

there is sourceforge.jp, or simply berlios

Now that I think it, telling that may be good for LW LLC:

By telling they might dissolve, they are getting out of the heat to gain the time necessary to understand how things will follow their course. That should help them to not being sued at all in any case and reorganize things.

Anyway I hope so :o

great et voilą, thanks for telling them. Now LimeWire has to come up with a new plan...
