thousands of 851.7Kb Zip files containing "setup.exe"

While searching for all kinds of files on Limewire I almost allways get hundreds of the SAME file appear. It has thousands of different names but allways appears as a 851.7Kb zip file containing a single file called "setup.exe". It doesnt install anything and I urge everyone NOT to open it or even download it ...my guess is it is probably a virus. Given the number of these files on the network I expect it is might be a sabotage attempt on Limewire or peer2peer file sharing to simply clog up the system.

My question to Limewire is ...are you going to do anything about it?

bugmenot July 7th, 2005 05:25 PM

lol, are you stupid

do you know anything about p2p at all

limewire is a program that lets you access the gnutella network, much like internet explorer or firefox lets you access the internet, are you gonna blame internet explorer for viruses? NO. they have NO control what's on it lol, stop complaining, don't download programs off of file sharing proggies like this, you'll end up with viruses.

Well if this link still works: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/search...der=descending

It's a virus & you need to get rid of it!!!

re: "lord of the rings" reponse ...thanks for the info on the virus definition.

re: "bugmenot's thread" ...Don't be so f****ing rude!! your comments were neither helpfull or constructive. I'm quite aware of how P2P sharing works and I'm certainly not blaming Limewire for this (durr!). I am merely saying that it would be quite helpfull if Limewire were to send an email to all registered users firstly to increase the awareness of these files and secondly to tell everyone to delete the file if it has been downloaded, because as long as it sits in the "shared" folder of everyones computer (whether opened or not) it will allways appear in Limewire/gnutella program file searches!! Learn some manners!!

Thats a real answer to the problem Bug!..Get yourself a file sharing program and don't use it!!...Here is a real answer..One day soon Gnutella will be so bogged down with viruses..That people trying it out will get one right off the bat and remove the program and tell there friends .."ITs ALL VIRUSES"
...People will stop using it..Concept will die...No programs will be shared..Which will make Bug there almost right!...And then some consumer conscience programmer will develop a P2P program that has capabilities to block files with a certin file size such as 851.7kb, 399kb, 765.5kb, 69.4 ect....And were all doing fine once again...But until then, I guess were just #$^%ed!!

And who do you think would want to damage a p2p sharing network? Who has gone to great lengths to maintain their "control" & dividends? Who has been to the high courts to take down p2p sharing? Who ripped off musicians for about 3/4 a century? Who provides corrupt audio files on the network? Who has provided unresponsive ultrapeers for people to connect to? Who wanted the EU agreement to include certain copyright legislation/laws? Who? Not me! lol :D Sounds suspicious doesn't it!

So I caught this 'Worm Alcra.B' bug and as I cleanse my system (using lots of bleach), I'm curious about what it does and why. Somehow there are HUNDREDS of zipped files with the worm signature, which are named as all kinds of media and software of the kind one might look for on limewire. I only ever downloaded one of them (big mistake). So I'm wondering- are these just copies of the virus which I've been inadvertently sharing? Is it all just a way of clogging the network? Seems pretty bizzare.

I don't know much about this technical stuff but I do love limewire and I hate to see its power used for evil instead of good.

These files are autogenerated along with whatever you search for. It's an anti-p2p project designed to stop people's enthusiasm for using p2p programs. Google Overpeer to get an idea of sponsored groups who are set up to do this.

Avoid files less than 1 MB or 2 MB (2,000 KB) for help stay away from these & not be confused by them showing up in results. See Arrange search results by size (click on link) to help keep those results at the bottom of the search results window so you know what they are. You can keep using the Junk filter to try to filter them out. The Junk filter is a dynamic learning filter. But viruses are the hardest to filter out. It takes time & patience & perserverence. The other spam types like the iPod advert, etc. are very easy & fast to filter out.
