Who to contact

welshmis

You have been scammed by mp3dollar so you contact your bank or credit card company to request a refund.

Until then, you have joined "THE LEGION OF THE SCAMMED" which probably has well over a thousand members mainly consisting of naive and gullible internet users (newbies).

does this mean Limewire did not get the money? I also did what the above poster did, I thought I was siging up for lifetime memebership. I still get prompt for me to get limewire pro and I thought I had that. Would it asked me to upgrade to pro when I already have it? Everything seems to be working find and I don't want to upgrade like it keeps asking me to.

Your question:

LW did not get your money, the scam site did and all you got in return was a URL link to LW Basic.

LW does not have a lifetime membership or any other membership to do with the purchase of LW. LW Basic is free and LW Pro cost $18.88, and for that you get six months worth of updates/upgrades.

Finally, you asked:

I strongly believe that all you got was a download link to LW Basic, which you now have, and LW Basic will keep reminding you to upgrade to LW Pro.

If everything is working fine for you then, as you say, do not upgrade to LW Pro if you don't want to.

However, I would strongly advise you to contact your credit card company and try to get your money back because all the scam-site did was direct you to download a free product, the lifetime membership is a sham and does not exist.

Good Luck.

WOW, thanks for the reply, I paid with my debit card, can I get the money back? I signed up for all of this through the limewire page, how can they scam from that? O checked the limewire pro and was directed to the 50.00 lifetime membership. Is there anything I can do now? Isn't there anything Limewire can do to stop this? How can they hijack people form the limwire page>

Hi-Jacked

Hi Cutie

You asked:
Quote:

I paid with my debit card, can I get the money back?
Yes, you should be able to get your money back because

a) Most banks, like credit cards, have an anti-fraud or internet fraud scheme.

b) You were hi-jacked away from where you were going, i.e. LimeWire, and sent to a scam site (hi-jacking is nothing new on the internet, that is why you should always have protective apps on your PC).

Explain this to your bank and you should get your money back.

Unfortunately, it has been done before and probably will be done again. I believe it can be done if a bogus BHO (Browser Helper Object) is planted in your Internet Explorer, which can be done by secretly downloading it while your surfing the web.
There are also other ways to hi-jack your browser, such as changing your PCs "Hosts" file, downloading Trojans, adding to your registry, etc. but they all require something to be downloaded to your PC, with or without your knowledge. That's why it so important to have a firewall and anti-virus app on your PC.

Yes, you should either get a new browser, like Firefox which most members of this forum recommend or get some help to go through your hard disk and get rid of the malware you picked up while surfing. Failing that, reformat and reinstall everything on your hard disk..

Apart from publicising this problem, sadly no, the LW Org has no authority to police the internet all it can do, via this forum, is warn people of the dangers.

PS. One other thing, your hi-jacking took place inside your PC, i.e. a secret program was triggered to take you to the scam site. Which is why I advised you to reformat your HD, and also means that you must protect yourself and your PC from these secret downloads.

Thanks, I just got this cumputer about a month ago, I bought spyware and norton antiviurs and had it installed by bestbuy, I don't feel good about reformatting my hard drive, I don't think I would do it right and would end up with more problems. How do I know for sure when I sign up for Limewire pro this does not happen again outside of now I know its 18.00 every six month? I really thank you for all your help and the time you took to explain everthing.

PC Guarantee

Cutie

If your PC is just a month old you may be able to get your supplier to clean up your hard disk for you, under the PCs guarantee.

You say you have Norton Antivirus (and spyware?), if you are using a broadband internet connection you will definately need more than just an anti-virus app.

Once you get your hard disk sorted, i.e. get that scamming software deleted, I will write out a list pf protective software you will need and PM the list to you.
