It could be a virus. There are viruses on the network that will do that. Check out this link part 4(a): WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of!

Good luck:)

ukbobboy01 October 3rd, 2005 09:44 AM

Well Jas

You will find that you are still infected and that Norton AV on it's own cannot quite kill off this problem on it's own because, I believe, anytime you go online you will be re-infected again. This is caused by a hidden program on your PC which monitors the (health of the) virus so that if it gets killed off it sends for another virus to replace it.

You will have to check your HD for new folders and delete them but do this offline, also I believe that there may be a hidden folder called C:\Update, or something similar, find and delete this folder.

I would also suggest that you check your AV scanner, make sure it is working properly, and update your virus definitions. You may not know this but some viruses can attack Norton AV and either disable it or make themselves invisible to the AV's scanner.

So, to summerise:

Delete virus created files and folders, especially the hidden ones.

Check, update and run your AV again.

Finally, never, ever go on the P2P network without your AV enabled.

Right now you have some hard work to do in order to make your PC virus free.

Good Luck.

UK Bob

PS. You might want to invest in a firewall, this will stop stuff coming and going from your PC without your permission.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 01:55 PM

dont know

ok iv done every thing i checked my computer 10 times with 2 anti-virus programs (avast 4.6 home and winantivirus 2005 pro0 and deleted all infected files (only 7) now theres no infected files i have a firewall and its been up and running since the begining and still nothing it keeps poping up!!!

LeonMcS October 3rd, 2005 02:11 PM

Ouchies. My comp runs AVG, Microsoft Beta, AdAware and Spybot and they seem to do the trick. Though if you don't have them, your obviously going to have to get on the net to get them, once again taking you back to square one. If all else fails, invest in a spare hard drive and reboot, pain in the butt but did it myself awhile ago on a non related matter and saved me a lot of heartbreak and frustration.
As UKBobby said, check out which folders and files have been created lately, make sure you have 'show all hidden files/folders' tabbed on.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 07:58 PM

nothing

iv ran adaware already like 30 times and it didnt help any. and i deleted all files that i didnt get there was over 10,000 files that i didnt download in the shared folder all between 100 and 800kbs  i dont kno how they got there but deleted them that didnt do anything ether. this is realy anoying

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 08:11 PM

virus

now every time it opens avast detects about 5 or 6 infected files!? has anyone else got this? if so PLEASE HELP!!! its driving me crazy!! if i fix this im probebly never gona use limewire again!!! and i never thought i would say that

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 08:11 PM

Sounds to me like your Limewire got like it got corrupt. You may have to uninstall it and start fresh. and rename the folders that you dontwant shared so LW wont recognize them again. you picked up something from Gnutella. Unistall LW quickly, deleted all the leftover folders, move your downloads to another folder, rename it, reboot your computer, scan and defrag your system, then, start fresh.

If Limewire is not right for you then I strongly rec. Bearshare. It might give you less trouble. ;)

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 08:54 PM

Reboot your computer then you should be able to delete the leftover limewire folders in your c/program and your documents folder. then I strongly suggest you scan and defrag your computer afterwords.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 08:56 PM

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/security/fwvirus.html

go here to get some special anti virus tools these ones are free.

You still might be infected.

Grandpa October 3rd, 2005 09:09 PM

To begin with LimeWire did not cause the problem, you did by downloading a file with the virus in it. Most of these viruses are found in software searches and file sizes of 900kb or less. And there is very few programs out there that small. Most are 10MB to 800MB when you do a search and see a bunch of files the same size with different names common since should tell a person there is something wrong here. Like maybe it is a virus.

Any way go to link below you will have to register there they will help you get rid of the virus. And the next time you are on a P2P network make sure your anti virus is running and use a little common since when you choose the files you are downloading. If you are not sure about a file do a bitz look up on it before you click on download.

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:14 PM

yea for Grandpa, do as he suggests. I still think you should defrag your hard drive though and reboot because Im not understanding why you cant delete the leftover limewire folders. I use the Anti Vir Free edition and it works wonders for me. stay away from pirated software. seriously. those will all be infected oneway or another.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:17 PM

i downloded the file with the virus by acadent and i stoped downloadingit cuz i knew it was a virus but it just kept starting to download again so its not all my fault and i think i the problem file with one of the programs that Sphinx just told me about so ill see if that stops it!!! i hope so

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:24 PM

Get the AntiVir XP free edition. Its really powerful and good. It will totally scan your hard drive in maybe 20 minutes or so and it will delete the infected file. Its saved my hard drive a number of times from the web hijackings.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:27 PM

alrit it sounds good and it found the file that my other two programs didnt and thos are alltogather worth about $60 i didnt pay anything for them but theyr expensive

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:30 PM

it just found like 10 viruses in files that my stupit brother downloaded

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:34 PM

ok good, allow the program to delete the viruses for you and you should be ok.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:36 PM

this is the best program i cant beleave its free

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:41 PM

its an excellect program, just remember to allow it to update so that way you can use it when in Limewire. Keep it turned on in your system tray and you should be fine. let it do a couple of more passes to be on the safe side. Once you clean your system, try rebooting again and see if you can delete the leftover limewire folders.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:42 PM

after the virus program is don im gona restart and start to defrag my hard drive cuz im gona be gon tomorrow so it can go with out any one bothering it and ill see if that stops it i sope it does

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:44 PM

k ill do that

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:47 PM

yes, try to defrag and scan when you have the time. I always do it at least once a week. and never turn off the anti virus program. Always leave it running so that way it will start when you turn on your computer.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:48 PM

man its almost done it still has about 50,000 more files (i have alot) to go and it found about 15 worms and trojans

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:50 PM

wow, you were really too infested. Keep cleaning it. ;)

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:52 PM

i only turned off the virus program cuz it was going off on files that i had downloaded befor and got deleted on acadent and knew didnt have a virus and then i for got to turn it back on!!! i have realy memory

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:54 PM

i love this program now its awsom it just found another 5 viruses that nothingelse found its awsum and im gona use it alot to make sure this never happens again

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 09:55 PM

With this virus program, you wont have to turn it off. you will never even notice its running in the background. it will only pop up a warning to tell you of a virus etc that you can delete/whipe.

Grandpa October 3rd, 2005 09:58 PM

Some times I just Have to laugh sorry about that :D :D :D

Sounds like a little education is in order here. OK jas98235 if your anti virus is going off it is telling you there is still a virus allot of viruses copy themselves and literally reproduce 1000s of copies. Trust your anti virus don't turn it off.

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 09:59 PM

i just restarted and i think that worked limewire hasnt tried to open yet im gona try to delete the left over files and ill c what happens

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 10:01 PM

Sphinx October 3rd, 2005 10:06 PM

reboot, and then right click to delete the leftover limewire folders. you should be ok now. Ive never seen anyone get so infested before and grandpa is right, viruses mutate and spread. Always keep the AV turned on. ;)

jas98235 October 3rd, 2005 10:09 PM

k i never thought my computer would get this infected eather and iv had about 5 computers befor this ond and they barley ever even got 1 virus and thamks again for helping me
