Who gets caught?
 

I just wanted to know what sort of people usually get caught using P2P file sharing programs. Are they the people who leave their computer on all week? Those who have a lot of files? (we'll say may 100+) What about people like me who have only about 10-20 files at a time? Or is it just random? And is there any way to block IP addresses so you won't get caught?

I know... I ask a lot of questions. Thanks.

It is an urban myth that you can conceal your ip number.

So even with that guardian thing you can still get caught?

Peer guardian blocks selected people/organisaitions from accessing your p2p files. It does not block the RIAA. It blocks ALL KNOWN informers of the RIAA, and there is a difference. Yes it is excellent and worth having. I just wish people would not come on the forums and say things that are not absolutely true, as if Peer Guardian makes you totally imune from getting caught.....

AFAIK there is no was to conceal your ip 100% If I am wrong someone will no doubt tell me:)

If you are sharing less than 100 files I would think the chances of your getting caught AND sucessfully prosecuted were less than minimal. If you were sharing 10,000 files and they were by all the latest stars, who put the food on the tables for the RIAA, you would, no doubt, not be so lucky.

Ive been using, Bearshare & Limewire to log in Gnutella since Napster went bust. The trick is,dont share all your files, limit them to a nice low number and you should be ok. They are only going after students that use P2P in school and those that have over a thousand shared files, from what I know.

Too many people probably heard something about the 1000 limit. The Tufts Daily is reporting that

I rationalize file sharing (music) with the thought that anything that is played on the radio or TV may be freely recorded and shared with friends or strangers; just as if they had been tuned in themselves.
I would have no problem with paying money to the recording artists and their back-up musicians, even to the technical people and the editors. But the Labels and Associations are not on my Abused and Needful list.
Nobody loses money because I download anyway; I wouldn't be buying in any case. CDs that can hold 72 minutes of music are sold with 40, the same as vinyl albums, for about the same prices or higher, in spite of the lower production costs.
I do feel, though, that college and university computers shouldn't be used for heavy file swapping; the servers have to be up-sized to handle the extra load, and the costs have to be passed along.
