virus

I recently downloaded Limewire and almost everything I try to download is a virus. I used to use Winmx and very rarely did I get a virus. Why so many with Limewire? I think I'm going to have to ditch it.

Sphinx October 25th, 2005 10:42 PM

Welp, if you read the forum, this is basically a 'Gnutella' forum because Limewire is only the app that connects you to the Gnutella P2P network, which, in turn, allows you to connect to other computers/users. If you were only downloading music, instead of pirated software & games, you would not have gotten a virus. Limewire IS not responsible for your downloading habits. A piece of software or game or video is ten times larger in file size than a virus. If you used WinMX you'd know how to download and stay away from smaller files. Its not Limewire that gave you the virus but a fellow user. Stick to MP3 singles and you'll be safer or, educate yourself and know what you're downloading before you click your mouse. ;)

Wow! There is no ned to be nasty! Sorry I'm not an expert like you. I thought forums were for help. Geesh!

The problem here is that any software/games you search for are ALL small and contain a virus. Real software is not available on this network apparently.

Thanks anyway but you didn't help me with my question. And I gather from your rude answer that you don't have one anyway.

CyberStalker October 26th, 2005 12:50 PM

Don't take it personally. She always tends to snap at people. This link will give you some info on viruses that you need to look out for.

Lola, It is important you look at file sizes before you download. I do not download games, but I am aware that they are at least several megabites, so if you are expecting something that you know the aproximate size of. Don't go for something a lot smaller. Don't confuse Megabites with Kilobytes either!

Read Cyberstalker's link and remember that the list is growing daily.

In a few months you will be a little less tolerant of virus related posts, more like Sphinx even ......... well just a bit:)

Lola2001 October 26th, 2005 02:20 PM

Thanks to both of you. My point was that all the stuff that comes up in the search for software IS small and DOES contain a virus.

Took me a few downloads to figure it out about the small file size but I got it. I just wonder how come everything I search for is a virus.

Thanks for the link and the posted info.

And no...I would not become intolerant to people who don't know what they are doing, that is why they seek help on places like this. Maybe Sphinx has permanent PMS if she joins forums just so she can "snap at people".

I had no idea about Gnutella until I read another post by some poor guy who paid lots of money for nothing. I didn't know all of these p2p's connected to the same network. That was interesting to read and I have more of an understanding now.

Again, thank you both for your patience and help. It is appreciated by us "newbies" :)

Sphinx

I am definitely in your camp on this, I get fed up with newbies saying "LW gave me viruses" when all it takes is a bit of common sense to avoid being infected.

I also dislike newbies who expect to be spoon fed on how to use the applications on their PCs instead of reading their manuals.

I even hate newbies that start of by saying “I'm not a nerd” or “I'm not a geek” as if that was some sort of badge of honour, since when was ignorance something to be proud of?

I am more than willing to help people who have run into a "brick wall" or who are genuinely stuck, if I can, but those that just can't be bothered or expect to be wrapped in cotton wool can go and do some growing up (newbies, welcome to the real world).

I'd have to agree with you there UK Bob. I don't understand why anyone would buy a computer if they don't know how to use the applications. I'm amazed that some people even know how to turn the computer on!

hmm, don't let my mother hear that, i didn't teach her yet that the computer actually does something else then be a pretty addition to the house :D

anyways, ppl that don't read are generally asking this sort of question, on the otherhand, i only read the sticky's, and not search the entire forum for whatever i want to ask, if it's important it gets a sticky, if it's not, then ppl mostly make a new topic. but about viruses i do seem to remember it is a sticky :D

but do make the difference between a newby and a noob

newby (or however you spell it): new person looking for help and wanting to learn.

noob: started as newby, but didn't appreciate the help they got so start to annoy ppl. aka irritating ppl.

Virus's and other Crap

This is my first time using this forum but alas long time p2p user, and this is what I learned;

1 - Files constantly get mis-named ,especialy XXX - videos - even the decent ones over 18, the only ones I at times try to get, sometimes have these really sick twisted names.

***Why, people try to promote their downloaded vids (even though their not making money) I really do not know ?

2 - asx Garbage - porn hyperlinks hyped with redirecters ,just plain garbage.

3 - 104kb - stupid IPOD comercial ,I don't download anything with that number '104' kb.

4 - have to look for the largest file - usually its a complete file.

5 - I never download anything listed as a 'quicktime' video - its always a hidden redirecter.

6 - scan all your files before opening them or un-zipping them ,seriously.

7 - too much porno, especially when your looking for something completely different ,like julie black music video and you get some other julie something porno video , have to block the XXX stuff when doing that.

You learn as you go ,experience ,don't worry about viruses anymore ,because there easy enough now to recognize the warnings and to avoid. I get the odd virus jumpin to my pc but that can be dealt with by the right anti-virus and firewalls.

 reading the comments about SPHINX and me thinks shes a LINX....
I don't know your idea of a newby but I do think the rudeness to anyone only brings on hate & discontentment. I think that the LIMEWIRE rules also address this.

I for instance may have more years of computer experience than most persons on the internet. I go back before WINDOWS and this simple communications we have today. Come to think of it I go back to tubes and diodes. That does not mean that I will not run into problems at some point. I read many of the inputs and do gain some insight as to the reasons my own downloads fail. I would be extremely irritated if some holier than thou so called senior administator of any type used a condecending comment towards my questions.
Folks I am sure that your computer is also a work processor. Write a letter and snail mail your opinions of the egotists to the owners of this site. The forum is for anyone to get the help they need no matter how inept they may sound. Seniors, if you don't like the question keep your unkind remarks to yourself. You really don't know to whom you are addressing those rude comments.

snapping at NOOBS

i'm with Sphinx on this one. if we ALL took the time to read first then write, maybe we wouldn't have to wade thru so many threads to find something we're looking for.

imagine if all we saw on the front page was NEW topics???
chances are good that, if you are NEW, your answer is in here.

try doing a search on any topic, see how many threads come up. just to find an answer to one question, you have to read thru all searched threads. (it takes me hours, cause i research alot.)
i'd rather read for an hour than write ANOTHER thread to **** someone off.

how about if the moderators just delete all duplicate questions, & send a "Nice" reply to the noobs to read first. just kidding, i know y'all are busy. (trying to read all these dups):)
