Question Mp3 Encoder you use to rip CDs [and then share in Limewire]

I'm just a concerned Limewire/P2P user. I noticed that many mp3 files on the Gnutella network are encoded using sub-optimal or low quality mp3 encoders. If you are new to CD ripping, this website will show you how to rip satisfactorily high quality mp3s from a CD (most experienced users probably already know what "high quality" is):

http://www.users.on.net/~alexanderino/cdex/

The website will tell you how to use CDex (an audio extractor program) with LAME (a mp3 encoder engine).
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAME [Wikipedia] :
Quote:
LAME is an open source MP3 (that is, MPEG-1 audio layer 3) audio compression application. LAME is a recursive acronym for LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder, although the current version is a stand-alone encoder. (See below.) The consensus (as of 2004) seems to be that LAME produces the highest quality MP3 files for (average) bitrates of 128 kbit/s and higher. In a public listening test early in 2004, 128 kbit/s LAME MP3 files were the least detectable when compared to uncompressed audio.

or you just use the new WMP 10 and rip with that

you can choose to rip to wma, wma variable bit rate, mp3.
and you can tell the bitrate it should be (for mp3 and wma, wma variable bit rate calculates the optimal bitrate itself)

wich works GREAT for new ppl aswell you know.

i use something else entirely but that's just for me.

Does that version of WMP use the LAME mp3 encoder engine? Any audio extractor program that uses LAME as an mp3 encoding engine should be fine. Also I disagree with ripping to wma as wma's quality is considerably less than a LAME encoded mp3 of the same bitrate.

More on LAME here:

wma files are much less universally playable than mp3's; not all audio programs can play wma files. wma is not as cross-platform compatible as mp3's. Not all portable mp3 players can play wma files. And then there's DRM. And particularly this concern: What you should know about WMA Files

Thanks for adding that info.

I, personally, won't download anything from Limewire with a wma extension.
