Couldn't open the file: MPG... Please HELP!!!

Hello everybody,

I live in England, UK and I'm trying to download the new MPG smallville episodes (season 5). The new season comes in the UK late January and I just can't wait!!!

I've been downloading in the past as well (seasons 3 and 4) without any problems!

Right now I'm encountering a problem I've never seen before. It happens only when I'm trying to open the new MPG smallville episodes (season 5). It doesn't happen with any other files whatsoever...

Anyway, here is what I get:

Couldn't open the file. Unknown error occurred.
The number of the error is -1404

Can someone please help me? Do I have an old version of Quicktime Player or is it something completely different? I have no idea whatsoever...

If this helps, I'm using a macintosh G3 with Mac OS 9.

Any help would be truly appreciated!

All the best

OS 9 eek! I love the operating system but your options for video are limited. I'd recommend XinePlayer (click on link).

For QT, I'd recommend getting codecs for Quicktime player. 1. DivX, 2. XviD, 3. 3ivx. BTW QT Pro options may offer you mpeg playback, I can't remember for OS 9.

These might be of interest: 1. QuickTime Plug-ins & MIME settings (click on link), & 2. QuickTime Plug-ins & MIME settings (click on link), & 3. Setting & updating QT MIME Plug-ins

devastated... :-(

thanks Lord!

so you think it's definitely the OS or the Quicktime I've got installed that cause the problem?

by the way,

on the preferences section of my QT there's only:

- Player Preferences
- QT Preferences
- Registration

there isn't any Plug ins or MIME...

I was sure at least one of the links I left had a sample image of where to find your MIME settings. It's under plug-ins or something.

Yep you might not have all the possible plug-ins enabled. Also, with newer video formats & almost no more support for OS 9, it leaves users like yourself vulnerable. That's why I recommended Xineplayer as it has in-built plug-ins (CODECs.)

You'll see the MIME button under QT settings. You can also get updates.
(I thought I had an OS 9 sample around somewhere but can't find it. I quickly put this together from some old snaps.)
