Limewire loading VERY slow I just installed the newest version of Limewire, and when I start it up, it goes so slow and it pauses my computer. It eventually goes to the mainframe but its un-useable because its so slow and it almost freezes my computer. I get no error messages, its just SO slow. And I have Java, and its still slow. Any suggestions? |
Which version of Java do you have? Do you use LW on a mainframe computer? Must be very large huh? :) Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. |
1. OS version? Windows XP Pro 2. What firewalls you have? Nvidia Firewall 3. How much ram? 1 Gig 4. Hard Disk space available? 102 GB 5. Connection type? Cable 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem: Scientific Atlanta - by Comcast. Router: Linksys, don't know model numbers. 7. Where are you trying to connect from? Home 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? LW Version: 4.3.97 Java Version: Version 5.0 Update 6 And I'm not using it on a mainframe. I'm on a router with 2 computers connected to it, just me and my roomate at home, on a cable modem. |
Anyone? I'm desperate, I can't even us LW. Pleassseeee someone help. |
Anyone out thereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee? |
Are you sharing a large amount of files? Sometimes if you are it will slow everything down. If you are unshare some of your files and see if that helps. Also read through this thread for tips on how to set up LW.A few things to consider while configuring Limewire for optimal performance... |
I just got a new computer, I have zero files. So that can't be it. It worked on my old computer. So I'm thinking it had something to do with whats on my new system thats making it run SO slow. But I can't figure out what. I tried Java, but I have it installed, so its not that. And I tried disabling my anti-virus programs, its still slow. |
You check the task manager to see whats using up all you resources. In windows press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Click on where it says Processess, then click twice on the column "CPU" it may give you an idea of whats slowing you down. |

Nope. I'm not using anything to slow my computer down. It says my CPU isn't being used at all. Its not like "slow" like I'm getting slow downloading, its like, pausing my whole system, and doesn't fully start up cuz my computer is so bogged down my LW. Somethings not making it load fully causing it to be so slow it slows my system down so its almost un-useable. |
You could try an experiment. Change your version of Java. The reason for this is sometimes one version of Java doesn't run well on some systems. Uninstall Java 1.5 using the Add/Remove Programs control panel. Then install Java 1.4.2 using the "Offline" installer version here http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html (Choose the JRE) BTW using the Resume/Find Sources function on too many files can slow down the computer. So if you or your other computer is doing this, instead do it on just 1-3 at a time "if" you use this function. Also make sure the drivers for you connection devices are up to date! In fact, make sure all your drivers for everything from graphic card to cpu, etc. are up to date. Also do a speed test whilst LW is closed. Choose one from here: http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/speedtest/ You can also seek help here to see if there's another issue affecting your computer NorbiesWorld (click on link) |
GREAT! Another problem. I uninstalled Java 5.0 Update 6 and Installed the one you said, but during the installation, my computer just randomly re-starts. And I try to start Limewire after it re-roots and it says I have a Java error, so I guess it doesn't fully install cuz my computer keeps re-starting when I try to install that version of Java! Gr. |
Well that's obviously not working then. Uninstall that version & reinstall Java 1.5 (take the JRE) Another possible reason I hadn't thought of before for your slowdown is, go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>iTunes>Sharing & disable this function. Perhaps you can use this as a reference: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=49500 |
But thats my problem. I can't even get to the start menu unless I wait like 20 minutes for the mainframe of LW to load. And it doesn't even fully load anyway. It like, goes so slow I can't use my PC. So..I've tried everything without trying to open LW cuz thats what causes my computer to pause and go so slow, that I just have to control alt delete and cancel LW. |
Go to Program folder of LW & find uninstaller. |
Ok, now what? |
Ok, now what? Uninstall? Then? (Thanks for helping by the way.) |
Oh I've confused your thread with another who was using theirs at work. To uninstall LW, the program should not be open. So if it's not open your computer is not slow right? So you can access your Start menu without problem to get to the uninstaller. Yes uninstall. Perhaps using another version of LW might do the trick. I'll send you a pm in a bit. BTW if your computer restarts then that suggests another problem with LW being the catalyst to start it, but not the underlying reason. If you're getting a Java error on restart, then I wonder what it could be affecting ... perhaps the graphics card. |
