Why can't I put more than 25 songs on CD ? Is there a way of converting the songs from Limewire to MP3 as I noticed I can't put more than 24 or so songs on a 700mb CD. Are the songs that I download in Wave format ? Can't figure this out. I thought I could burn around 100+ songs on a single CD. Thanks for any help or clarification you can give me on this. |
No thats pretty good 25 songs, sometimes I can only fit 16 depending on the size of the mp3..... Theres no way of shrinking it down that I know of, but I could be wrong....;) |
It depends upon whether you want to burn a normal audio cd or an mp3 disk. If you burn an mp3 disk then you're limited as to devices you can play it on. A normal audio cd can hold: (a) 650 MB = 74 min 14 sec or (b) 700 MB = 79 min 54 sec Keep in mind on a normal audio cd, 1 min takes up just over 10 MB An mp3 disk can hold as many songs as space allows. eg: If all your songs are exactly or average 4 MB in size then a 700 MB disk could hold 175 songs if burnt in mp3 format. |
Hi LOTR, how do you burn in mp3 format? do they play on a cd player the same... I usually burn through my itunes...:) |
I don't have a portable cd size mp3 player. But I can play them thru my dvd player. But instead of mp3 cd's, I burn mp3 dvd's! Yes you can do it thru iTunes. iTunes Preferences > Advanced > Burning & tick your option. The nice thing about burning them thru iTunes & playing thru the dvd player is you get menus of artists -> Albums & lists of titles. And of course you can program a playlist on a dvd player. I haven't burnt an mp3 disk in a while though. That's a lot of mp3's you can fit onto an mp3 dvd (4.37 GB) I haven't tried it on the larger dvd's yet ... here they're too expensive. |
Cool, I'm going to give that a try.... I've been getting a heap of the real old stuff for my Dad and I thought I would have to use about 6 cds, but if it works on your dvds I cant see why it wouldn't work for the home stereo... Thanks again.;) |
If you're going to try it, do it on an RW 1st. That way you won't waste a disk if it doesn't come out exactly how you wanted. I think I chose mp3 cd when burning the mp3 dvd I can't remember (as compared to data disk). |
Yeah I know what you mean, I've thrown out many a disc from my silly mistakes..lol :D While your here on this post, can you tell me how I would transfere mp3s to an mp3 player ( you know the little portable ones with the ear phones) Im getting my son one for Xmas... Its not the ipod just the basic mp3 player...;) |
hey sphinx can you fill me in...;) |
I useually use itunes, I find it will burn all my music where most of the time wmp will come up with an error on the file.... |
I bought Nero 6 this year & it works great for data burns. I can backup all my software on cd with it and music. Does itues allow for data burning or just mp3? I just spent the weekend burning and backing up my downloads from Gnutella. ;) |
I have no clue, it just has a burn button lol (mate you should know by now that I just play around with programs 'till I make them work lol) :D |
1 Attachment(s) Maybe it was a data cd I burnt I can't remember. But in your Advanced options for iTunes you have your type of disk to burn options. This is in version 6. In previous versions it was under its own tab at the top called burning. They've now move these options to the advanced section. The sample below is the mac version. Windows is basically the same. I just couldn't be bothered starting up windows to get the snaps. :D Give us a few hrs & I'll try it out on both mp3 & data formats. (This'll be interesting because my entire library is now on an external drive. It's not a reliable drive! ) |
1 Attachment(s) I answered the question to myself in just a few mins. iTunes can't burn mp3 dvd's. It burns them as data disks. Now that's solved. Roxio Toast can burn an audio dvd but I haven't attempted it yet. |
O.k., LOTR I dont get a similar image as you in the advance, what do I click on to get that....?;) Oh and I have itunes 6.... Sphinx does burning this way have to have a certain player or will any stereo do......?;) |
I think it's time to update my iTunes 4 in windows lol :D I had selected mp3 CD, that's why I received that message after I pressed the burn disk button because I had a dvd-rw inserted. However if you select data disk in the preferences then you won't receive that message. Edit menu, Preferences>Advanced>Burning (I'll need to install iTunes 6 to double-check everything is still in the same place as the mac version.) But keep in mind you'll probably only be able to play the disk on your dvd player & your computer if you burn to dvd. However, I believe there's car players out now that can play mp3 cd's & I think Pioneer has a car player that can play dvd mp3 disks. Available in USA, I'm not sure about here. As for your earlier question about a portable player. What did you have in mind. My brother bought himself an iRiver player which is roughly similar to iPod in its abilities. I think its cheaper than iPod. AFAIK Normally, many portable players will come with software that you install to your computer. This software acts as a go between your computer & portable player (sometimes called a Media Manager.) Or you may need to get the softw from a 3rd party I'm not sure. Some players may have the ability to drag & drop directly to their icon. Perhaps someone else can expand on what options different portables offer. Of course there's also other types of portables that store their music on removable media such as CD's or mini CD's. I suspect they're on the way out of the market. But I don't know, it's not something I normally research. |
Hey LOTR, only update if you need to, dont go and do it for me lol:D But Id like to say thanks for the help....;) With the mp3 player its a creative, it should come with instructions, or I'll google it and check it that way.....;) |
Someone who didn't like the creative player lol http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=49441 BTW here's some forum links that might help about Creative: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...692#post110692 http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ive+and+player http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ive+and+player http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ive+and+player http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ive+and+player It took a while but I updated to iTunes 6. I can confirm the options in preferences are identical. Just slightly different appearance to the mac. |
Fantastic, great info (what would I do without you LOTR), seriously thankyou for taking the time to help, is their anyway I can save this info to look back on for reference or do I just do a search for creative mp3??:p At least now your up to date on your windows lol...TY ;) |
Copy & paste to a document any url's you feel might be helpful. eg: this thread, just copy the url from the url address above. You can specify specific posts in a url but pm me if you really want to know how to do that. The 2nd link I gave above is such an example. It takes you directly to the last post in the thread. |

Well I did a little more research and found out some pretty good news. I went to a music retailer and explained my problem, and they were very helpful. They told me I probably had the wrong burner software. They very generously "gave" me a burnt copy of a software called Nero LG solution. I went home with it, installed it and wow, this thing works great. It'll burn mp3's or wave's and even DVD's if you have a DVD burner. I was eager to see if I could burn more mp3's onto a virgin CD than I usually do (approx 20). I ended up burning 65 mp3's onto a 700 mb CD and there was enough room left on the CD to burn another 65 if not 100 mp3's. The store did advise me however that when burning an mp3, it can only be played back on an mp3 player. Anyway, I just thought some of you would like to know this info. Thanks all for your help, and hopefully now I can help somebody else. :) |
It was a good thread I learnt heaps as well...;) |
If I burn as "data" will it still play back on a mp3 player or home cd player ? |
you cant play mp3 cds on a normal cd player. if you could audio cd's would be useless! you need an mp3 compatable cd player. (most dvd players are) i bought one for my car... cost about £400 but i think you can get them a lot cheaper. and yeah i use nero 6... definatly worth the £40 from pc world. allows you to rip audio cds to mp3 and edit dvds with your own startup screen etc. |
Yes, but if I burn them as data using Nero, will they play back on a mp3 compatibile player ? What's the difference between burning them as an mp3 and data ? In other words, what's the advantage ? When using the Nero Start Smart software, it gives me several options to burn. Three of those options are "Make Data CD" - "Make Audio & Data CD" - or " Make mp3 CD" Which option should I use to burn CD's so that they can be played back on a mp3 compatible player ? As well, which option in Nero Start Smart should I use to burn CD's that will be played back on a wave CD compatible system ? I know none of the above options apply for wave burning. (not sure is "wave" is the correct term) Sorry for all the questions, but I just want to understand this once and for all. What's the difference between "ripping" and "burning" ? Man, what ever happened to the old 78's where you just put a record on the turn table ? lol Thanks for your help. |
I'll answer some of your questions in part. I'll leave the extra explanations & questions to others. Ripping is the process of extracting from the CD to your computer HDD. Burning is the process of creating a CD/DVD-R/RW. Since cd burners use a laser which etches (burns) into the surface of the CD (little bumps/holes which signify zeros & ones - digital data) .... thus it's refered to as burning. I think you mean WAV right? 44.1 KHz, 16 bit, stereo; Waveform audio http://mp3.about.com/od/glossary/g/wav.htm & - http://filext.com/detaillist.php?ext...&Search=Search It's safest to 1st rip to wav or aiff 1st before converting to mp3 or other. As mentioned earlier, data format will maintain the mp3's id3 tags. However, perhaps some mp3 players might not recognise disks not burnt specifically in mp3 format. I don't know. |
Are you saying that I can "rip" a particular song from a CD and transfer that song (whether it be mp3 or wav.) to my HD then "burn" it with others to a virgin cd ? Thanks for your patience and well explained answer LOTR. |
Yes you can, for personal use only of course! Nero can rip & can rip into wav. You wouldn't want to convert a wav to mp3 unless you wanted to share it. Converting to mp3 means some loss of quality. How much depends upon the quality you set the mp3 for. Be that anywhere up to 320 kbps & stereo & no filters & maintaining the 44.1 KHz sample rate. But of course, Nero will convert mp3's to wav or audio CD. If you want to grab a choice of songs from different CD's & perhaps mix them with mp3's you've got a hold of, then keep the ripped songs from CD's in wav format. In that way they won't lose any sound quality whatsoever. After all, wav is a lossless format meaning it doesn't lose any quality. Whereas mp3 is a lossy format (it throws away information to help it reduce in size. This generally starts with the higher frequency ranges ... some which adult ears arguably can't hear anyway - above 15 KHz I think. But the lower you set the mp3 bitrate for (0-320 kbps), the more the info that's thrown away! And that includes (loss of playback info) across the board frequency ranges! There's different techniques of mp3 compression that the converters use in their process.) |
Wow, where in the world did you learn this stuff lol. I'm making notes pappy, and what scares me is, I think I actually understood what you said lol. Thanks a million, I truly appreciate the help. |

For myself, it was easier to use Nero 6 Express for data burns so I can backup all my software, videos & music on blank disks. I backed up my entire drive with just a few disks. :D |

As stated earlier, normal audio cd players will NOT play mp3 disks. You'd need a player which supports mp3. Or an mp3 player plugged into the stereo system. Or as I do, burn to dvd & play thru the set-top dvd player -> Stereo system. And yes it has a menu system on the disk (viewed thru TV.) At least it does the way I burn them. Choose artist, album ... |
I hope you dont think I backup Winblows? lol. Quote:
For movies, I use the codecs in WMP and I dont even think about it. I burn all my bought software, freeware, music & full length movies. In under ten disks, I have stored much data without any problems. Nero is the best in my opinion for burning. ;) |
to rip mp3s using nero you need a plug-in, i have it and i share it over the gnutella network so do a search for : nero mp3encoder plugin as i am sure others will probably being sharing too. i rip all my audi cd's as i then put them onto just a few mp3 cds. plus i manage to scratch cds in about a day so i always got backup copies... i use burn data.. simply because i never realised the was the mp3 option! i think that must have been added in on the update or something... as far as i am aware both should work, just try it. cd's cost pennys nowadays so its just trial and error my friend. wav. cant help you, never done it. haven't even got that option! if you mean normal audio, you click on make audio cd. |
