Question Sharing - Doing the right thing

Hi there

I only joined last night and having read some the posts & threads I am a bit worried.

I want to use this site to download a Tv episode or a movie. Once I have watched it I would just delete it.

I am worried that I will have nothing to share which seems unfair. I have a pretty old laptop, if I don't delete stuff will it use up all my memory and make my pc really slow ?

Any advice from the experts ?

Whenever I download songs I erase them from LimeWire after burning them onto CD. What I usually do is leave one song in LimeWire so that way I'm still sharing something!

Angry sharing

cyberstalker, you're not exactly furthering the cause of file sharing. one file? c'mon. what is it that you feel you are accomplishing by not sharing files you've downloaded?

If it affects your computer to the point that you can't use it for usual tasks then I have no problem with not sharing (or sharing less).

Its just as well we dont all share your view CyberStalker. As if everyone deleted what they downloaded and only shared 1 file, it wouldn't take long for the Gnutella network to be rendered useless...

limewire could you please explain to me how sharing files can slow down your computer? unless you mean people uploading slows your own personal downloading, again its just as well we dont all feel this way!

The only way that I know of that LimeWire will slow down you computer is if you are sharing a large volume of files and when you first add them to your share folder it can take a long time to hash them. While LimeWire is in this process it can slow down your computer it takes a large amount of CPU and ram to do this process. But once this is complete all things return to normal.

The only other thing that will slow things down is miss configuring LimeWire. If you do not configure your bandwidth properly for your connection it will appear to slow down your computer, this is a misconception it isn't your computer that is slowing down it is the connection that is overloaded.

While I do not believe in not sharing there are some cases where I believe it is mildly acceptable. People in some areas have very slow connections 26K etc. And it can be difficult to download, share, and cruse the Internet at the same time. When I am on the road I get these connections allot of the time and it really is quite frustrating. But I still share I just don't share when I am cruising the Internet. When I am done cruising the net or answering questions in the forum I will start LimeWire/Frostwire and leave it running all night. Thus eliminating the problem.

Thanks for the advice guys,

I will just keep on saving files and see if I get any problems. I would like to help as much as I can.

Grandpa, I don't know what Hash is, at least not in the way you mean !

My connection is a bit slow but will see how it goes.

Loving Limewire so far and everyone is very helpful.

If you want me to share a sh*tload of files then give me the f***ing money to put more space in our harddrive. This computer is my sister's and there are three people that use LimeWire on this one computer. The last time we left ALL of our songs AND videos in the harddrive it slowed everything down to the point where images on the internet wouldn't load up. You may want to think twice before speaking to someone that way. I find it incredible! I get snapped at for what I said yet there are how many freeloaders out there that refuse to share their files? Tons! Right now I have several songs and some videos in my LimeWire so I am sharing.

Yes, that was what I meant. If a dialup user needs to browse the internet (even with graphics disabled) I think its pretty pointless to be sharing until they can dedicate all their bandwidth, which at most should probably have only one upload slot anyway.
