limewire criticaly SLOW

As soon as i run lime wire its slowing my computer down to an unbearable level, Im using lime wire basic and have been doin so for the last 2 weeks all's been fine but the last couple of days as soon as i open the program it makes my computor run so slow i canot opperate anything, and my computer is making a funny intrmitant noise whilst limewire is running. As soon as i completely close limewire down all is fine again ive tried uninstalling lime wire and reinstalling but has made no difference ANY help would be much apriciated also the fault still persist wheater or not the internet is connected and internet seems to be working fine.
