Firewall software

Does anyone know of a good and free firewall application? I have microsoft's, but I don't feel like it is doing the job.

I've also heard from many sources that XP's firewall is not that good. It still does a job. Here's a list of some http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Downloads/c=4.html

Remember this Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Thanks,

What are you using?

Lord of the Rings December 20th, 2005 07:04 AM

On my mac I use OS X firewall at times. But only sometimes. On my windows 2k, it doesn't have one officially but seems to have a built in one since it runs on my mac. I can't activate my OS X firewall if my win 2k is running, it comes up with a message saying another firewall is already active. (Might be some type of built-in network firewall) Sorry about the odd answer to your question. lol :D

Ok, so which one should I get out the ones you recommended?

I am obviously not a computer guru.

I just wanted to be protected as I am downloading. I run a windows platform on a compaq presario. I just bought it a year ago.

256 mb sdram
40 gigs

I have also heard this virus program is good for scanning programs that are being downloaded, rather than having a program that scans programs that are already downloaded.

Avast antivirus

Have you heard of it?

Hello fiveeagles,

I'd recommend ZoneAlarm from that download page first of all - it's very good but sometimes doesn't work well with Home Networks - if that's the case with you, try downloading Sygate instead. (All of them are free).

Avast AntiVirus can be downloaded here:
http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Downlo...ils/id=20.html

It's one of the best free AntiVirus programs I know. :)

Thanks!

I have downloaded both programs and now they seem to be conflicting....any ideas? I have recently removed my syngate firewall, but I do want a firewall.

Lord of the Rings December 25th, 2005 11:01 AM

You shouldn't run 2 software firewalls together because, yes they may conflict with each other. Choose one & disable the other. Don't forget to configure it for LW as in the 1st link I gave in my 1st post.

Many firewall producers (even M$) recommend not running 2 firewalls simultaneously for the same reason. ;)

Hi,

First of all, I agree completely about turning off all firewalls and anti-virus programs except one of each.

My recommendation for a free Anti-virus program is AVG. This program is as good as any paid program you can buy.

I can say the same about Zone Alarm that was mentioned earlier. This one is top of the line also and it is free:

I am sorry, but maybe you misunderstood me.

I only had one anti-virus software running and one firewall running. Both seemed to be conflicting with each other. I will try the Zone alarm software you have suggested.

Thanks
