A number of sites do speed tests. This is one http://www.dslreports.com/stest but you should do several at diferent times and from different sites. Google will give you plenty! (don't forget to bookmark a site(s) you find particularly suitable for future reference)

Hmm movies are large files, and any host that has one movie may have many more. You may have to try clicking find more sourses a few times before you become waiting on busy hosts.. The host may well be permanently stretched and movie files can take a long time to transfer.

re-search, and re-search again, but be reasonably patient. I believe it will help if you are sharing a good number of files. A host is likely (I'm not entering into the question of whether he is justified or not) ... to allow uploads from those he can see are sharing in preference to those who are not or appear to not be sharing.

if you cut your upload slots in half it will upload faster and take stress of your downloads

I guess it depends who is uploading off you and at what speeds, and what speed connection you have. I have a reasonably slow adsl connection and usually set my upload limit to 5 files @ one per person. ....say 5 files @ 10KB/s = 50 KB/s equivalent to maxing out my upload speed of about 400 kb/s although I rarely see 5 hosts at 10 KB/s at my end! I adjust this a bit according to who is uploading, but it fits generally with what I see. Others will find totally different settings work for them. .... If I cut my hosts to 3 perhaps, I don't usually see uploads going faster. If I do I might leave that setting to allow a fast uploader a better speed.

I am not aware that halving your uploads will do anything to your downloads, unless you are on dial up modem. although I do find that having my uploads maxing out my bandwidth will not do the responsiveness of my computer (including the limewire display) much good and I may reduce the percentage bandwith accordingly if this is happening.
