&^%$#@ Pro Version

After several very positive comments as to the advantage of the Pro version I made the small investment.

How I wish I had just made a donation and not installed the Pro version.

When the Pro version was installed NONE of my incompleated downloads were carried over. Grrrrrrrr. I posted looking for help on this but didn't get one reply.

Now four times this week when I start LimeWire it "can't restore my downloads". I NEVER had that happen with the "free" version.

Comments?

I am also having issues with the Pro version. Greatest program I ever saw while free. The $18.88 Pro version, not so great. I will end up dumping the Pro version and going back to Free.

You didn't get a reply because this does not normally happen. I do not know how you can get your incomplete downloads to resume.
Somebody else might but I doubt it.

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2005 08:49 AM

It sounds like you chose a different downld location to the previous version you had on your computer & that's why your incompletes weren't recognised. But I would have thought you'd be using the same preferences so I don't know why this should have happened.

LW will refuse to load incompletes for these reasons:

1. Your system crashes whilst LW is open.
2. You jump backward to an earlier version of LW.
3. You don't close LW properly before shutting down the computer. LW can take a minute to close properly. If you have your LW options set to close only after present uplds & downlds have completed, then it won't close down fully. (LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Shutdown)
4. You accidentally erase the download.dat file which is found in the incomplete folder.
5. You have your downld folder (& thus incomplete folder) set for within the LW program folder. And you then install over the top of this folder.

Perhaps you should delete your LW preferences. For LW 4.10 you'll need to do this twice since you had a previous version earlier.
(a) Delete your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.)

(b) Similar to above but instead, the 4.10 preferences folder is called limewire. Instructions here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...449#post182449

BTW if you want your old incompletes, then search your computer for the previous downld folder & choose that one when you set LW's options up again.

First thanks for the help and suggestions.

I did used the same location.

1. Your system crashes whilst LW is open.

Didnt

2. You jump backward to an earlier version of LW.

I tried to but the new version opened.

3. You don't close LW properly before shutting down the computer. LW can take a minute to close properly.

I am sure it was closed correctly.

If you have your LW options set to close only after present uplds & downlds have completed, then it won't close down fully. (LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Shutdown)

That feature is not selected.

3. You accidentally erase the download.dat file which is found in the incomplete folder.

That incomplete data was zapped when the Pro version was installed.

5. You have your downld folder (& thus incomplete folder) set for within the LW program folder. And you then install over the top of this folder.

Hum. For some reason I didnt install Pro in my C/Program Files but rather in E/mp3/Limewire which is where the download file is. Sounds like this might be my problem. Should I remove Pro and reinstall it in the C drive? (Away from the download file)

Perhaps you should delete your LW preferences.

I will wait your advice re above first.

That is a severe error to make to have your downlds going to the program folder. Yes it will have deleted your previous incompletes. Unfortunately there's not much that could be done about it now. At best, you could try using a file recovery program, but you'd also need to recover the download.dat file & not only the incompletes. Without the downld.dat file the incompletes won't be recognised.

In future, make sure you do not choose your program folder as your downld folder. Best to have them in totally different directories a reasonable distance apart or better still, a different partition/HDD.

If you are using Windows XP you should be able to move your old incomplete files to the new folder by going to your old incomplete folder and highlighting the file then choose move this file. Browse to your new folder and put them there. If you can find them

Thanks once more

It sounds like you might be limited for space, the installation won't take up too much space. So the answer is yes. But if you still have your downlds going to that folder presently, then remove them before uninstalling LW. You don't want to risk making the same mistake. ;)

Lord

I am not sure about this but if he installed it on a separate drive E/mp3/Limewire, then if he is running windows I do not think it would have removed the incomplete folder. I just moved mine from C:/ to D:/ the original incomplete folder was still in C;/Documents and settings/User Name. I do not use that folder as my incomplete folder I never have I use my F:/drive for incomplete.

But it did not move it and when I moved LW form C:/ to D:/ it kept my same incomplete and saved files when I started it the incomplete resumed.

Also the download.dat file are you sure about the name or is it download.bak

Lord of the Rings January 1st, 2006 12:01 PM

There's two files, one with the .dat extension & the other with .bak The 1st is the main one.

AFAIK If he installed over the top of his program folder which is where he was saving his downlds to, then yes it most likely will erase the downlds since the installer will remove the original folder at the beginning of installation. The issue here is the download folder being inside the program folder. Unless I'm missing something here.

I have just been using the pro version for a few days and I find it the same as the free edition. Regardless, I love LW. The downloads are the fastest that I have seen from any p2p program.

oldtrout February 4th, 2006 03:55 PM

I think that LimeWire is the best of its kind going...however...having made all the recommendations above my stored partial download files STILL keep getting zapped from time to time. VERY annoying and so is the fact that LimeWire support doesn't answer my queries.

Does anyone have any idea why?

Thanks

Lord of the Rings February 4th, 2006 04:27 PM

oldtrout which version of LW are you using? There was a bug in one or two of the recent versions re: incomplete files.

See http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._history.shtml ? up to 4.10.4 had this bug!

Perhaps you should update to the most recent version. ;)

oldtrout February 4th, 2006 04:47 PM

I had 4.10.0 Pro.

Thank you I have updated it. I wasn't aware of a newer version.

I don't think I have come across a software provider that didn't advise their customers when an update was available.

My God even the infamous Bill Gates does that!

I hope that clears up the problem as it has been most annoying.

Thanks again.

Actually LW has been criticised for their prompting updates. So I'm surprised you didn't get one. :D

oldtrout February 5th, 2006 05:26 AM

I had "major" selected but have now "selected ", maybe that will make a difference.

Once again thanks for your help.

Grandpa February 5th, 2006 10:56 AM

I really don't think the notification option works very well, I have mine set for beta releases and it has only notified me once when the last dozen or so beta releases were available.
