Security

Hi there

I just got a shiny new laptop and have gone wireless. I have the Windows Firewall enabled, Norton Anti-Virus 2005 and Microsoft Anti Spyware. My wireless connection is WPA encrypted and password protected.

Should I need anything else to be "safe" using Limewire, there seems to be a lot of threads about Viruses at the moment. I know that too many "protection" programmes can be a problem.

Cheers

Remeber to only use one firewall, as using 2 or more will make you less safe, because many start working against each other.
That also means our windows firewall should be turned of.

Some do work together, but you will have to do extensive checking up on that issue if you want to feel safe.

I only use the one in my Antivirus package, then I know it won't cause any problems. The program even told me to turn off all other firewalls when enabling it.

i was told by my computer (guru) that microsoft anti-spy & norton are sufficient for home pc's & laptops.

silly me me i haven't gotten around to running MS yet. when i went with roadrunner, it comes with AOL security, (McAfee firewall, spyware, anti virus, popup blocker etc.)i am getting AOL pop-ups now and then. 'course it tells me security is excellent. bet it talks to all the girls (and guys) like that!!

i guess if you use AOL security, you will also need security for the security!!;)

do you have norton internet security or just the antivirus? they usually come together! and your internet security will have a firewall built into it...

settings and status - personal firewall

AOL security comes with a spyware program that is not p2p compatible. I think it's PestControl or another that the spyware forum (spywarrior) gives the thumbs down to. It will remove LW from your computer. Better are 1. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) & also this 2. ad-ware (FREE) are worthy programs instead of AOL's spyware program.

Hello Crawler

It's just Norton Antivirus 2005, I got it OEM with the shiny laptop. I get 3 months free so will look about for an upgrade then.

So that will be about March I will be needing advice !

disruption?

it doesn't really remove it so much as disrupts the connection between the shortcut & the program, on mine anyway. then only when you do a scan. i stopped auto scans & do manually. now i know when it's going to "disrupt." still PIA.

not p2p compatible, that explains why...
