Range Unavailable ? Hi there Just a wee question. When I look at the monitor tab I can see the people uploading from me. I just noticed that some say "Range Unavailable". Anyone know what that means and if I can help them in some way. I did try to search for an answer but I think I have worn out the search thingy and it's having the weeked off ! I have a wireless ADSL connection with my Ports Forwarded. No Firewall showing and bug reports are all "True". Cheers Guys xxxDxxx |
Really missing the search thingy I hope someone at Limewire kisses it better soon ! Sorry I didn't notice if it was Bearshare users or not and it seems to have stopped coming up. Thanks for the input. xxxDxxx |
Hi there It's back ! It's on lots of uploads from Limewire, Bearshare, Sharaza & Morph 500. It's a different file too so it's not that. the plot thickens ! xxxDxxx |
Hi there That took a bit of working out to get the screen shot, but not a clue how to paste it here ! |
Hi there It's me trashed not the PC !........ I had to save the screenshot as a jpeg, Tried to attach it but it was too big a file. Paint wont crop piccys so had to download a programme to crop it. Cropped piccy too big still. To inset an image on the page you need to send it to your web page first. Tried to find my web space with NTL but can't see anything on the NTL site thats clear on where to access it. After all that I poured a large Baileys Points for trying though ! xxxDxxx |
You might want to give FastStone a try for screen shots it has a built in editor in it for cropping and resizing. It works very good and it is free. http://www.faststone.org/ |
Thanks for that, I will give it a try. Still want to know about the Range thingy though ! xxxDxxx |
1 Attachment(s) Hmm I don't ever recall having seen that before in my 4+ yrs of using LW. But just a few days ago, I upgraded from Mac OSX 10.3.9 to 10.4.4 & whilst last year I rarely had my firewall turned on, I now have it turned on with extra options of ... Block UDP Traffic & Enable Stealth Mode, whilst having port 6346 clear for LW. Also I am manually port forwarded thru my D-Link router. I admit I haven't used LW much on my mac over the past 7 weeks. But tonight I opened it & noticed the same error of : "Range Unavailable" for people trying to join my queue for uploads from me in my monitor window. These people would very quickly show up at the top of the list & then drop off. Which suggests it's because they're unable to join the queue. BTW I only have a 256/64 connection. I tested it tonight whilst LW was open & uploading & whilst spending a few mins trying to load a page on the forum & I still got a 58 kbps "real speed" result from a speed test which is surprising considering. So I generally only have one person uploading from me. Sometimes two if I'm not browsing (hey I was on dial up only 16 mths ago. lol) But back to the point. Sometimes the no. would grow up to 6 or so with this status. Sometimes just a couple. I was wondering at 1st whether it was related to my firewall settings. Despite my bug test show 'True' for incoming. I was also wondering if it was a new phenomena, so I searched the forum before posting & found this recent thread. I also found this: Problems downloading (Phex but not directly related other than what it hints at being unreachable) & Stief's reference to it here LimeWire 3.7.8 Beta BTW I also found this 416 response, even though ranges overlap I've heard from others attempting to direct connect to me that I generally only show 2 stars connection quality. That in itself may figure in this. But I'm just not sure why I haven't seen or can't remember having seen this before when it's happening to me at present at such a frequent & consistent rate. Sample below is the top of the upload pane of the Monitor window: |
BTW the LW versions on the Range Unavailable ranged between versions 4.1.x to 4.10.5 & also Bearshare. It seemed one of the BS actually managed to get onto the queue. BS Lite version whereas the BS Pro couldn't at my temporary observations. But Bearshare lite & other BS's 4 & 5 are on the queue as are Foxy & Morhpheus 500 5.x & other LW users. |
I wonder if it has anything to do with having OOB searching enabled/disabled. I am not quite sure as to what OOB searching actually does |
AFAIK LW is set to search in the immediate area vaguely determined by language & culture. In earlier versions of LW there was an extra option in regards to this. So thus to my understanding OOB (Out of bound) search is out of the immediate area which I suspect is best used for searching for rarer files or files that might belong to other languages. So what you suggested might hold some weight here. Since I am surrounded by south east asian cultures that don't sit in the middle of the ocean. And I am aware I get uploaders (& downld from) people from SE Asia, USA, Europe, etc. basically all over. But the majority are probably more on my side of the time line or side of the map ... whoever drew it up. If it was the chinese then it's read right to left & not left to right. If it was by the english then it was definitely right to wrong way of doing it. lol :D |
Ranges unavailable only mean that you are sharing a file and that you are in the download mesh. However, the file you share and that you are currently downloading isn't completely downloaded so some chunks are unvailable for downloaders. When they ask for a chunk you don't have, you answer as range unavailable. Ciao |
Thanks for explaining the mystery - you learn something new every day ! xxxDxxx |
My Grandfather always said if you didn't you wasted that day. |
Yep, partial file sharing. I had deleted my preferences before using LW this time around. So this setting was different to usual. I can confirm the file they're trying to upload is one I'm downlding. Someone is uploading it, there's many in the queue from all walks of gnut clients, & all of those that are showing the Range Unavailable are trying for the same file. It's over 1 GB in size & presently 69% downlded. I didn't notice if it was the same file yesterday since there were a lot more getting this status for obvious reasons. I only started downlding it yesterday. |
