is anyone able to explain the function of 'console' for me please

I'm not 100% sure of it's function, I do know it's used for getting stack traces.

Search (top right, between faq and home) for 'console';)

By console are you refering to Linux or mac osx or as birdy asked? For unix, it's just that, a means to communicate more directly with the unix under-belly of the OS.
