File Names Whats better?

I have a question. I just joined LimeWire, and I have a question regarding files i share.

Is there some type of protocol on how they are named? Should I include the Artist, Song name and Album name in the actual File name?

Or is that information viewable if I just put that information in the Properties of the File its self?

Not sure what is the preferred naming method, but I'd like to put what I got where it is most easily found.

Appreciate any suggestions/help so i can get these files out there.

Everyone tends to do it their own way. Personally I have found the following works well, and files get displayed clearly.

I use iTunes and edit the id3 tags or labels using iTunes . I make sure the id3 tag is v2.3 and the files generally show in Limewire correctly, but with only the song title and track number showing in the File name

Some people include the Artist, Song name and Album name in the actual File name which can be easier if they are not using something like iTunes.

either way the files will show up when someone searches for them

You can edit the label details in the limewire library, but I find this to be a pita as half the time it doesn't work.

I hope this helps ... there are different ways of doing this and no protocol is clearly followed :) let us know if you need more tips.

No ITunes

Yea that i Tunes stuff was over my head lol I dont have any of that, I just have some files I got from elsewhere, and from my own Cd's

You know how if u click file properties and u can change the info in the summary... I thought maybe thats where it be easier.. but I dont know if anyone can see that info....

Changing the file name is not a very good idea.. Files altered like this end up with 2 different and sometimes conflicting titles:) .. You really need to change the id3 tag, which is part of the mp3. iTunes does this fairly painlesslyfor me .. but there are plenty of other editors available. if you google id3 editor, you will find them.

What is an id3 tag? I'm not that savvy...

like I said an id3 tag is like a label attached to an mp3, it can contain descriptions and artwork as well.. It's just a built in label with a silly name :)

That sounds over my head. My mp3 files i have don't have any files files associated with it besides the file itself, I assume the id3 is a text file? Ihave show hidden files on.

If you could explain how I can edit that file I'd appreciate it.

The ones I want to upload are mostly .rar files, like the whole album in one file. I dunno maybe i should just put 'em on and not worry bout who finds them and who doesnt.
