 If you have XP then did you consider a system restore? Were you refering to this patch which increases connections http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools Your problem sounds like a system issue. If you've deleted preferences, reinstalled Java & LW, then I'm not sure. How about a reformat. You did configure your system didn't you for LW so it can connect through the firewalls re: XP firewall & UPnP settings for your modem/router? See Connection problems? Check here first!
