Does the number of connections you have determine the variety of your search results?

Yes--but the variety is really set by the hosts your search reaches.

However, a search can't currently reach every one of the several millions of machines on the network.

Reconnecting every once in a while might allow your search get out to a different part of the network.

is there any way to expand the range of searchable network my connection can reach?

Apparently, LW Pro in Leaf mode has the largest "horizon" at present.

Searching on a different day/week/month also is a factor. 5 PM (GMT -4) is a popular time for people to be on the network; weekends better yet.

So, try searching when you'd guess a typical university student of the country you want might be online. Try this for Japanese content ;) to get a sense of what works.
