Well ... try installing the Java 1.6 beta as it's already had great reviews & performance http://java.sun.com/javase/6/download.jsp JRE "Offline" version which is a 15.72 MB downld.

Pity you can't uninstall the other versions. Did you try to do it in SAFE mode (reboot in safe mode.)

BTW you might want to take a look at this utility Crap Cleaner as it will help to clean out your registry & is free & safe to use.
