Risks of 'Unknown Bitprint"?

Just wondering what anyone thinks about the risk of downloading a file with an Unknown Bitprint. I'm happy the file I'm choosing isn't one of the spammy/virus 'usual suspects' in terms of filesize, and anyway I'm running OsX so that's not a big deal. But I am worried about downloading a b-i-g app which later turns out to be a load of corrupt (and possibly HD corrupting) cack. Would anyone risk it?
Obviously someone has to be brave and rate an unknown file, but I'm small and frightened and don't want to be the first

If the file is a media file, using the Preview button can help decide whether to continue.

If it's a program file, the OS X "programs" can be compared for file size to see the ranges offered. I wouldn't risk an OS X OS disk, since they are just not worth the risk and are pretty cheap anyway. For other programs, go to the home site of the program and see if they offer a demo first.

Once you know what the "real thing" is, you might then be in a better position to evaluate the stuff that shows in the wild.

btw--.dmg files are really the only ones worth looking at, since those are primarily for OS X. The .zip files could be for Windows, and the .sit files are most likely for OS 9

thanks stief, I'll take your advice. At the end of the day it's a bit of a juggling act between possible gains and possible harm, and I always seem to end up erring on the side of prudence rather than greed. Boring, but practical. Cheers
