My ISP's customer service

Lately Limeware hasn't been connecting so I upgraded to Pro.....still wouldn't hook up. I came to this forum and read about ISP's blocking Limewire.....well mine was on the list. So I called them on it. I told him my story and he gave me the firewall routine. I told him I read of the bandwith blockers in some blogs. He puts me on hold....lol.....comes back on and gave me a bit about my wireless router not being fast and I should use a hard line.....then he goes "look if I'm downloading I used the hard line....it's faster"....I've only ever used wireless on this computer. Then he says..." unless you're exceeded your bandwith of which they allow 60gig/month.....some people abuse it and use 200gig/month and they slap a "monitor" on them and so on"...." but as long as you're under 60gig/month there should be no problem."

Then, out of the blue.....my connection goes, turbo charged / excellent connection and everything is working awesome. I used to download maybe 5-10 songs a month and maybe 20....10 minutes videos....this wouldn't be exceeding 60gig would it ?

I don't suppose you're using Shaw are you. They are unpredictable! Yes they do slap filters onto those who they desire. The amount you suggest comes to less than 10 GB. I don't know how accurate you are but that is what you're suggesting. They are known for filtering individuals. And are infamously reknown with all p2p programs not just LW. But sometimes they single out individual p2p programs to filter.

Ya it's Shaw....some months I don't download at...just surfing.....can they cap you like that?

Lord of the Rings April 14th, 2006 06:49 PM

If only surfing then no ... but they have special programs that can detect p2p program use. So if you are using p2p such as LW then after a while their anti-p2p program filter will kick in. It may take some minutes before it takes effect.

Good story!

Sheesh. Sometimes I start to think the ISP's internet admina are on a bonus for how much bandwidth they can save. I sure hope the Help desk people have a high powered boss who can kick the internet admins' butts when they get hassled with all the "I can't connect" calls.
