What is this "trojan" thing I hear about? And whats it do? |
a Trojan is a little piece of code that is added into your OS....it basically creates an open door for a hacker to easily enter through, thereby giving them control of your computer |
 |

I just had to do this yesterday whilst dealing with the pipas.a trojan...no program would delete it, though Spybot would detect and delete ONE of the entries, but not totally kill the sucker..so in the end I had to boot into safe mode and delete the .exe that was being slealthy and changing its name every boot up, and then delete the registry entry..seems to be gone now... |
I came across a trojan today. McAfee noticed it. It was in my temporary internet files so I deleted all of them and right now I'm doing a virus scan. Is there anything else I should do just in case? |
download and use Spybot Search&Destroy (when updating I have found the 'Safer Networking #1' server to be the most reliable, and also get AdawareSE... update both and scan with them if you find something, it is a good idea to reboot and scan again to see if it comes back (like the one I had did) so that you know what's up... |
Am I to assume that this SpyBot is free? I'll do a search on it right now. |

I just downloaded SpyBot Search&Destroy. It asked if I want to make a backup registry key. What the hell is that and should I make a backup of it? Sorry for all the questions but I never had to do this before. |
the backup will preserve the present state of your registry before the program starts deleting things...this is in case something is deleted that causes problems with your system, so that it can be put back to its prior state in an emergency situation..to be honest, I skip this, as I am pretty confident (OK, read stupidly arrogant if you will) as to what I let Spybot delete, but in your case it sounds like the backup is a good idea from what you've said |
I'll just make a backup just in case. This is my sisters computer so I don't want to **** anything up on it!:p |
Hey Guys I've had search and destroy for awhile now, how do I tell if i set the backup or not, I cant remember when I installed it if I chose to or not..:p |
Cool thanks for that, the only thing I've had in the Recovery and its been there awhile is Windows security Center Antivirus Disable Notify... What does that mean Peerless??? |
1 Attachment(s) Wondering Why Hopefully that doesn't mean your alerts have been disabled. Windows XP will let you know if you do not have a firewall turned on or if your antivirus has been disabled. You can check by going to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Security Center on the left hand side of the screen click on change the way Security center Alerts me. Make sure all of the boxes in the pop-up are checked. |
Hey Peerlees, I use to use Norton but have since gone to Avast.. I have completly deleted all signs of Norton, but when I did istall Spybot I was using Norton.. So should I just leave it there and not worry about it?? |
Hi Grandpa, All the boxes are checked....;) |
well...said little 'hack' is a norton's thing..I guess Windoze don't like them, lol, and refuses to recognize proper protection, hence they (Norton's) have a little hack to stop the Security Center from bugging the hell out of you....I know it bugged the hell out of me during the update process of my version of Norton's products, and I was damn glad when I finally got the update that contains that 'hack' since you are no longer using Norton's, then said hack is totally useless to you now, so of course just leave it in the quarantine of Spybot..... |
Excellent thanks for the help...;) |
I believe that hack is a Norton Firewall thing Windows firewall and Norton's do not get along at all. And the Norton firewall is a much better firewall than Windows. It blocks incoming and outgoing. Windows only blocks outgoing or incoming I really can remember. Alzheimer's I guess  |
:D Ahhhh Grandpa your not doing to bad lol... Windows Firewall is all that I have is that a bad thing?? The norton security that I had previously didn't have a firewall either it was just the basic set up...;) |
You can get zone alarm it is free but remember to configure it for LimeWire. And yes I do Like Norton's but it uses more memory but if you have plenty it is godd too. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...eeDownload.jsp |
Ewww no, any suggestions on which would be a good one that works in with LW... I do have Peergaurdian as well.. Avast AV Spybot Ad-Aware... |
You guys are on the ball this morning, checking it out now....;) |

Let me know if you think I've done something wrong...;) |
Sorry I didn't know there was a compatibility issue. You might want to read the last post in the thread below it tells how to fix the problem. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=19987.0 |
Luckily I clicked No, do you think it necessary to delete the line the poster was talking about (I didn't quite get what he meant).... |
I couldn't find the line it says to delete. There is another link to the Avast site. Evidently Zone Alarm blocks Avast from assessing the Internet but it can be worked around. http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html#idt_6867 |
This is what was suggested If you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off web shield transparent mode proxy. Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case). Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line. Save the edited avast4.ini file. If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast compatibility dialogue box the transparent mode proxy in web shield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video Can you make heads or tails of that??? |
you are using free... so, go to Root:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA then locate the 'avast4.ini' file... then right click and choose to open with notepad or wordpad... then find the line of that .ini file that reads 'ZoneAlarmCompatibility='... delete the whole line... close notepad, choose to save changes, and turn the program on and see what happens..of course, follow the given advice to make a copy of the avast4.ini just in case things go whacked...in which case you might even have to boot into safe mode to remove the edited version, rename the original back to avast4.ini, then restart in normal mode.... oh, and obviously turn the program off before you start trying to edit the .ini file.... |
1 Attachment(s) wondering why The file they are talking about is the one highlighted in the pic but I can not find the line they are talking about. Search through the file on your computer and see if you can find it. When you click on the file it will open up with note pad. If you find the line just highlight it then got to edit and choose delete |
OK Guys I've deleted the line... So how will I know if things are ok or not???;) |
It's me again lol... Ok I ran a scan and everything seems to be working fine... Both Apps are up and running Cheers to you both for your paitience and help...;) |
I thought everything was fine and on computer start up I got the same message, do you think I should remove Zonealarm Firewall and try another? |
I've removed it, do you have any other suggestions??;) |
When I do a scan in Spybot there is always these files that I can't get rid of. Two of them is WindowsSecurityCenter... both virusscan and firewalls. I just deselect those two just in case but the other two are called Altnet and *******Products. When I try to get rid of them it says it can't because they may still be in the memory. How do I get rid of these two damn things? |
firewalls hi there, i have stopped using windows firewall and have mcafee personal firewall which i get free with aol, will this be a good version, as it it free or would i be better using?buying something else |
