Has anyone compiled 1.8 w/out ads?

I am really tired of Limewire 1.8's ads. I was wondering if anyone has a website, or has seen a website that has limewire 1.8 without the ads. This houldn't be that hard to do becuase the source is available from limewire.org. I would do it myself but I am not a progremmer and lack the tools and knowledge to do it.

Thank you!

I"ve tried compiling it on Win98 but I cant get ant to compile/install correctly. I'll have to compile in Linux. It'll be a week at the lastest before I can try it though. But if I find out anything more. I'll post something.

Yellow5Guy November 20th, 2001 03:45 AM

That would be great. Xcentrik's post wasn't recompiled from the source, but was just an edited dll to make it so the ads didn't load.

xcentrik November 20th, 2001 05:11 AM

Sorry thats all I could find . Atleast the ad is gone

Yellow5Guy November 20th, 2001 12:13 PM

Thank you for at least trying to help. I'm shure there are a lot of people who have somthing to contribute to this discussion, but are too lazy to post a reply.

crack

I wrote the edited dll, just out of curiousity, what more would u like limewire to (not) do? Ad's are the only thing that annoy me, u can simply not install the spyware when u install it... right?

Yellow5Guy November 20th, 2001 07:02 PM

When you install limewire you get the OPTION to install 2 spyware/adware components. Even if you choose not to install the two, a third one, the one that serves the ads, is still installed. The company, cydoor, that serves the ads has been known to distribute spyware. As far as I can tell your dll only prevents the ads from being displayed and does not prevent the spying. On limewire.org they have the source code for limewire w/out the ads. I was wondering if anyone has compiled this source code. If I had the knowledge I would do it , but unfortunately the only languages I know are Q-BASIC and TI-BASIC. Basically my goal is to get a fully functioning version of limewire w/out Cydoor.

If everyone is tired of banner ads and spyware then Y not go back to version 1.7 I saw a link in here for it and I got 1.6 on c.d I still like that 10 times better. Just a thought guys

anti-bearshare November 21st, 2001 04:06 PM

Just use the OTHERS LimeWire install/package and that package doesnt have ads or even any kind of Banner.dll. Just install it over you're old LimeWire install and run the ad-ware just to check if you wanna make sure. It works fine for me.

Anti-bear, where is the OTHERS/Limewire Install Package?

Thanks!

Thanks to "anti-bearshare" for posting the info on the Java version. Double-checked after install (which there is none!), and no ad-ware at all. Works great in 2000.

Of course, after trying this out for a bit, I'm afraid I'll be going back to Gnotella or Xolox. Didn't get many hits at all, even after configuring extra servers, firewall-passthrough, etc. I get at least triple the amount of hits on a keyword in Gnotella, Xolox is about the same. Downloads in LimeWire seem to automatically stop after about 3 tries, Gnotella will keep banging away on its queue all day.

What makes one client work differently/better than any other? Aren't they all using the same protocol and network?

And people wonder why their network connection is so slow. Its because of things like this. Everything must be done in an efficient way not brute forcing until it works or STOPS to work!

Yes, but different clients implement technologies (ways of searching, querying and routing). Just because you make a client that has a TTL set to 20 (you get interconnected this way, I've noticed this starts to happen after the 8th hop, that host X can be the 9th hop and also the 3rd hop away from you. Meaning you get twice the traffic needed to transfer throughout the hosts you're connected to. Example: host X searches for "Z" you'll get 2 queries of "Z" when you really need only one.). Or they have continuous searches throughout the day after a specific interval (like every 10 mins it searches for the same thing over and over until something is found.) Well most of the time you're pretty much connected to the same area/group of hosts. So this only causes more um-needed traffic on the network. Then last swarmed downloading, even though LimeWire is going to release a client with this very shortly. But I'm sure they do it in a more efficient way than others. This is where you download from an X amount of hosts the same file for faster downloading time. Which is good, but we need to implement SuperNodes and better query/routing technologies. Which LimeWire is doing as we speak. The following post will end my thought.

Also read my other post: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...?threadid=5592

Its the third one down from the top.

Remove cydoor from all your products...

I'd suggest running a version of ad-aware then visiting http://www.cexx.org/neuter.htm and look for the neuter method and install the dummy files.

Until cydoor proves their business practices are not spyware motivated or until they modify their policy to protect user data, I will not run their ads in my software. In a soft advertising market such as now, I'm sure they're looking for ingenious things to do with the data they collect on their users to turn a profit.

Compiled non-ad 1.8c

Download this for a compiled non-ad version.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gnutel...s/Renegade.exe

You may need to go here first and click on files if that link stalls.

Download RENEGADE (limewire 1.8 no ads) from...

Download RENEGADE (limewire 1.8 no ads) from here:

ftp: skullz.d2g.com
login: renegade
pw: renegade
in directory: /pub/gnutella

Connection is SDSL (16KB up into Internet - not very fast, but still faster than nothing!)

File has been scanned for viruses - it seems clean.

P.S. Rene Gade said they will recontribute the source code to Limewire.
